IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of people caught speeding and killed in fatal road accidents during eight years of time in Britain.

Overall, with the installation of speed cameras, the fines have increased constantly over the eight years of time. On the other hand, it does not seem to have any positive effect on road accidents.

The report initially shows the speed camera fines which were at 200,000 at the beginning of the first year and increased to 600,000 untill year 5. Around year 6 and 8 the fines show drastic hike reaching 1,600,000.

On the other hand, the road accident fatalities have been constant over the eight year time period with a small dip near year 4 around 3000 and then moving its way up to 3400 at year 8.

When a survey was conducted, most of the people proposed that the speed cameras had no effect on road accidents with a little bunch thinking otherwise. They thought it's main idea is to generate revenue rather than reducing the risk of accidents and urged that there were too many cameras on the roads.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both graphs and the survey, and your overview identifies the main contrast: fines rose while fatalities showed no clear improvement. The account of fines is broadly accurate, including the rise from 200,000 to about 1.6 million, although the increase is not constant and the year-five figure is closer to 580,000 than 600,000. The fatalities section captures their general stability, but the low point is around 3,100 in year four, not 3,000, and the final figure is about 3,350. The survey summary includes the main opinions but would be stronger with key percentages, such as 60% saying cameras do not reduce accidents and 71% believing revenue is the main purpose. Some details are therefore less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The report has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, separate descriptions of the two graph trends, and a final paragraph on the survey. This makes the information easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall” and “On the other hand” help signal contrast, although the latter is repeated and does not always express a strong opposition between the points. The sequence within the fines description is also slightly unclear in “Around year 6 and 8,” where the reader has to infer that the sharpest rise occurs across those years. For clearer progression, group the figures by trend and use more precise references, for example, “from year six onwards” and “by the final year.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the charts, including “increased,” “dip,” “fatalities,” and “generate revenue,” so the main information is communicated. However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for a formal report: “increased constantly” suggests an even rise, “drastic hike” is informal, and “a little bunch” is not an appropriate way to describe survey respondents. There are also spelling and form issues, such as “untill” and “it's main idea.” Aim for accurate chart language and formal collocations, and avoid repeating “year of time.” A broader, more precise range would help you describe the sharp acceleration in fines and the relatively stable fatality figures more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrastive sentence beginning “On the other hand” and the clause “When a survey was conducted.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely obscure the intended meaning. Some grammatical patterns are nevertheless awkward or inaccurate. For example, “during eight years of time” and “over the eight year time period” use an unnecessary construction and need a plural form in “eight-year period.” In “They thought it's main idea,” the possessive should be “its,” and the sentence would be clearer as “They thought its main purpose was to generate revenue.” Continue practising concise time expressions, possessives, and accurate sentence construction while retaining your range of sentence types.
