IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the main pattern in the line graphs: fines rise substantially, while fatalities fluctuate. However, the report only partially covers the task. It omits all three survey tables, including the clear findings that 60% think cameras do not reduce accidents and 71% believe revenue is their main purpose. Some figures are also inaccurate or unclear: fines are about 580,000 in year five and 780,000 in year six, not 60,000 and 600,000; fatalities finish at about 3,350, rather than 3,400. The overview is relevant, but the repeated statements about fines and fatalities do not replace a concise summary of the survey results. Cover both the graphs and tables, and select accurate key comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is an attempt to organise the report, with an opening, an overview and separate discussion of the two graph series. This gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the rise in fines is stated several times, and the fatalities section repeats that cameras were introduced without adding information. The overview is not clearly separated from the detailed description, and the report ends abruptly. Linking phrases such as “however” and “while” are used, but connections between ideas are sometimes unclear. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview, graph details and survey findings, and group related figures in a logical sequence rather than restating the same trend.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt some task-relevant vocabulary, including “fluctuates,” “surged,” “recorded” and “fatalities,” and these choices show an effort to describe trends rather than rely only on basic words. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or repetitive, which can make the report difficult to interpret. For example, “speed camera violation for over speeding” is an awkward way to describe the number of drivers caught, while “fatal casualties” is not a natural collocation here. Spelling errors such as “Britan,” “sahrp” and “fatalties” also reduce clarity. Aim for precise, conventional chart language and check spelling carefully; avoid repeating “surged” when “rose” or “increased” would be clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts longer sentences and uses some clauses to compare trends, as in “while the number of fatal casualties fluctuates.” However, sentence structures are often incomplete or difficult to follow, and errors occur frequently. The opening has faulty agreement and duplicated wording (“the line graphs illustrates the trends of of”), while “in sixth years the number … surged” has problems with number and sentence construction. Several sentences lack clear punctuation or a complete grammatical structure, and the final sentence is unfinished. These issues sometimes obscure the intended comparisons. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, then check agreement, articles, plurals and punctuation before adding more complex clauses.
