IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The line graphs illustrates the data of speed voilations and road fatalities recorded since implementation of speed camera on highways in Britain.
overview, the line graphs and the data illustrates number and response on three issues being asked in public survey.
Is speed camera reducing the overspeeding voilations.what is the main reason of installation of speed cameras . whats the public opinion about the number of cameras on road
as per speed camera line graphs the number of speed voilations recorded rose from [redacted phone] to [redacted phone] from ist year of survvilence implementaion to 7th year. however sahrp hike was observed from year 5 to 7.
The other line graphs comperhnds the data about road fatal crasghes in 7 years recirded with speed camers .
The number of fatal events statrted high from ist year and fluctuated steadily till 7thyear since instalation of road cameras .
when public was asked about the effectivess of speed ca,meras role in reduction of overpeeding incidents , most of the oublic responded no which contributes 60% of all responses , positive respone comes at second position while habe no idea comes at third as per public opinion .
survey results about the factors leading to installation of cameras ,the higest response of public was to genrate revenue thats makes 71% of all data collected , to improve road safety was seconfd and no idea reamined third in publice opion making 26% and 3% respectively .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the two main topics and report some relevant figures, including fines rising from 200,000 to 1,600,000 and survey responses of 60% and 71%. However, coverage is incomplete: the third survey question about camera numbers is omitted, and there is no clear overall summary of the key contrast between sharply rising fines and broadly stable fatalities. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the fines reach 1.6 million in year 8, not year 7, and fatalities fluctuate across all eight years rather than only seven. The description of fatalities as “started high” does not explain their limited overall change. Include all three survey findings and accurately summarise the main trends to make the report more complete and relevant.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has some grouping by topic: it first introduces the charts, then discusses fines and fatalities, followed by survey results. Basic linking words such as “however” and “while” also show an attempt to connect information. Nevertheless, the ideas are not arranged in a clear report structure. The opening is fragmented, and the survey discussion stops after two questions, leaving the final topic unaddressed. Several sentences are difficult to follow because information is compressed or joined awkwardly, for example the sentence beginning “survey results about the factors…” A clearer sequence—introduction, overview, chart details, then survey findings—with distinct paragraphs and more precise links would improve progression and make relationships between points easier to understand.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “installation,” “public opinion” and “responses,” so the reader can recognise the subject. However, the range is basic and several inaccurate or misspelled expressions strain understanding. Examples include “speed voilations,” “fatal crasghes,” “comperhnds” and “effectivess”; these errors make key information harder to interpret. Some phrases are also imprecise, such as “fatal events” and “positive respone,” while “genrate revenue” is an awkwardly expressed survey finding. Build a reliable set of chart-description terms and check spelling and collocations carefully. More precise wording for trends, proportions and road deaths would make the report clearer and more appropriate to an academic summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
There are attempts to form longer sentences and use contrast, as in “however sahrp hike was observed from year 5 to 7,” but grammatical control is weak and errors occur throughout. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “The line graphs illustrates,” and the opening fragment “overview, the line graphs…” is not a complete sentence. Articles and plurals are often missing or inconsistent, as in “installation of speed camera” and “number of fatal events.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also unreliable, particularly in the long survey sentence beginning “survey results about the factors…”. These problems sometimes obscure the intended relationships between ideas. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add controlled complex forms, checking agreement, articles, tense and punctuation.
