IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The data presented by the graphs below shows the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The fines collected had remarkably augmented throughout the years by more than 8 times comparing to the first year of installing the speed cameras. A survey conducted on the british population shows that 71 percent of the population think that the main reason for installing the speed cameras is to raise revenue which is true as the fines collected had raised by rougly [redacted phone] pound between year 7 and year 8. On the same survey 60 percent of the population claim that the installed cameras dont reduce the number of accidents on the roads which is merely clear as from year 6 to year 8 the number of road accidents fatalities kept on increasing. Many assume that the number of the speed cameras is too high as the majority of the interviewed population voted for that option and only 17 percent think that it's the perfet number needed .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You include relevant information from both the graphs and the survey, and identify several key opinions, including that 71% believe cameras are installed to raise revenue and 60% think they do not reduce accidents. However, the report does not give a clear overview of the main patterns across the data. It says fines rose more than eightfold, which is broadly accurate, but the claim that fatalities kept increasing from years 6 to 8 is incorrect: they fluctuate and finish only slightly above their year-6 level. The comparison between rising fines and public opinion is relevant, but the figures and trends need more balanced, precise coverage. Add an overview and describe the fatalities as broadly stable rather than steadily rising.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the subject, discusses the survey results, and links these to the graph. Phrases such as “On the same survey” and “Many assume” help signal movement between points. However, the whole report is presented as one paragraph, so the overview and separate data groups are not clearly distinguished. The repeated use of “which” to attach explanations also makes relationships between evidence and interpretation less clear, particularly in the sentence about revenue and fines. Some links rely on assertion rather than a clear progression. Use separate paragraphs for the overview, graph trends, and survey findings, and make each comparison explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of vocabulary relevant to describing trends and opinions, including “augmented,” “raise revenue,” “majority,” and “increasing.” Some choices, however, are inaccurate or unnatural for this report: “fines collected had remarkably augmented” is an awkward way to describe a rise, and “the perfect number needed” is not a precise description of the “about right” response. There are also noticeable spelling and form errors, such as “british,” “rougly,” “dont,” and “perfet.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they reduce precision and control. Prefer standard chart language and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use some complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “as,” and the main message is generally understandable. However, several sentences are long and contain multiple ideas joined without clear grammatical control. For example, “The data presented by the graphs below shows” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “from year 6 to year 8 the number of road accidents fatalities kept on increasing” has awkward article and noun-phrase construction. The final sentence also shifts between “Many assume” and “the interviewed population voted,” making the reference less clear. Work on agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and divide longer sentences so each one expresses a clear comparison.
