IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The line graphs show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught for rash driving by speed cameras placed on roads. This also illustrates the number of people that were killed in road accidents, over a period of eight years since the speed cameras were introduced.

Overall, in this specific time of 8 years the fines increased steadily at first then , abruptly from 200,000 to 1,600,000. While, deaths ratio remained close to 3,000.Meanwhile, the results of survey conducted on people regarding speed cameras describe their irrisponsible attitude towards road safety.

Soon after cameras were installed , there was a little amount of 200,000 as a fine but, withthe passage of time the increase in graph shows the change in behaviour of people and their least concerns.Meanwhile, the damaged caused y road accidents remained almost same in all these years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the two broad trends: fines rise substantially, while fatalities stay near 3,000. However, it covers the task only minimally: the survey results are not meaningfully reported, and the final sentence is cut off (“THE RESULTS OF SURVEYS SHOWS THAT PEOPLE ARE LESS INTERES…”). The claim that the survey shows an “irrisponsible attitude” is an unsupported interpretation rather than a description of the figures. Some details are also inaccurate or unclear: the chart concerns drivers caught speeding, not “rash driving,” and fatalities fluctuate around 3,100–3,350 rather than simply remaining close to 3,000. The response is 140 words, below the required 150. Include the key survey percentages and a complete overview to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the report into an introduction, an overview and further detail, and linking expressions such as “Overall” and “Meanwhile” indicate relationships between ideas. However, progression is difficult to follow because the two charts and the survey are not clearly separated or systematically described. “Meanwhile” is repeated without always clarifying the connection, and the final paragraph ends mid-sentence, leaving the survey discussion incomplete. The long gaps and inconsistent spacing do not help the presentation. Use distinct paragraphs for the charts and survey, and order information logically—for example, describe the fines trend, then fatalities, then summarise the survey findings. Clearer referencing and complete sentences would make the report easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “increased steadily,” “remained,” and “results of survey,” so the main trends can be recognised. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward for a formal data report. “Rash driving” does not accurately describe the chart, while “deaths ratio” and “damaged caused” are unclear expressions. “Least concerns” and “irrisponsible attitude” introduce judgement rather than precise reporting. Spelling errors, including “irrisponsible,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for neutral, chart-focused language and use precise terms for the measures and changes. For example, describe the number of speeding fines and the number of road fatalities, and report survey responses rather than judging respondents’ attitudes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts some longer structures, such as “While, deaths ratio remained close to 3,000,” but control is inconsistent and many sentences contain errors that make the relationships between ideas unclear. Examples include “the fines increased steadily at first then, abruptly from 200,000 to 1,600,000,” which lacks a clear verb after “then,” and “Soon after cameras were installed, there was a little amount of 200,000 as a fine,” which is awkwardly constructed. There are also agreement and punctuation problems, as in “THE RESULTS OF SURVEYS SHOWS,” and the final sentence is incomplete. Build accurate simple sentences first, then add complex clauses with correct punctuation and agreement.
