IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given graphs illustrates how many drivers in the UK got fines for speeding and how many people died in road accidents over an 8 year period. At the same time what people think about the speed cameras.
Overall, it is evident that, the number of speed camera fines increased dramatically , while on the other hand, the number of road accident deaths remained relatively constant.
According to the servey, the majority of the public held a negative view regarding speed cameras. Specifically, 60% of people think that speed cameras do not reduce the road accidents, while 71% felt that the main purpose for the installation of speed cameras was to raise revenue rather than improve road safety was 26%.
Also a compelling fact that 56% of people think that there are too many speed cameras on the roads. Whereas 19% of people think there are few speed cameras and 8% people don't know about that. Therefore, there are a significant raised in speed camera fines over an eight year period on the other hand road accident remained unchanged after 8 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast accurately: fines rose sharply, while fatalities stayed broadly stable. You also report several key survey results correctly, including 60% who said cameras do not reduce accidents, 71% who believed revenue was the main purpose, and 56% who thought there were too many cameras. This addresses the task, but some parts are less fully covered: the fatalities’ small fluctuations are not described, and the survey’s 32% “yes” response and 17% “about right” result are omitted. The comparison that road deaths “remained unchanged” is a little too absolute, as the figure varied around 3,100–3,350. Include a few selected figures from the graphs and all major survey categories to make the report more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an opening, an overview and paragraphs covering the survey and the graph trends. This helps the reader identify the main points. However, progression is uneven: the final paragraph returns to the graph after discussing survey results, and the link between the survey and the trend is not clearly developed. Some connectors are awkward or repetitive, particularly “while on the other hand” and the opening “Also a compelling fact.” The sentence beginning “Therefore” combines a survey observation with the graph summary without a clear logical relationship. Group the graph information together, then present the survey findings in a separate paragraph, using simpler, more precise transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “speed camera fines,” “road accident deaths,” “installation,” and “raise revenue,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “remained relatively constant.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “servey” is misspelled, “there are few speed cameras” does not precisely express the survey response “too few,” and “a significant raised” is not an appropriate phrase. “Got fines” is understandable but informal for an academic report. Aim for accurate collocations and forms, such as “received speeding fines,” “a substantial increase,” and “respondents considered the number too high.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and the overview sentence communicates the main trend clearly. However, errors in agreement, sentence construction and punctuation recur. For example, “The given graphs illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “At the same time what people think about the speed cameras” is a sentence fragment. The clause “rather than improve road safety was 26%” is structurally unclear, and “there are a significant raised” contains an incorrect construction. Commas are also misplaced in “it is evident that, the number…” and spacing around punctuation is inconsistent. Build complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and clause boundaries; this will make your comparisons easier to follow.
