SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graphs give information on the amount of drivers who was caught by the CCTV placed on roads, number of people killed in the road accidents in Britain since speed cameras was introduced over eight-year period.
The tables depict the results of a survey on people's perspectives on speed cameras.
Overall, the fines on speed camera increased drastically over the eight-years period, while the number of people killed on the road fluctuated throughout the eight years. A larger percentage of people believes camera does not reduce the number of accidents and that the main reason for installing cameras was to raise revenue.
Turning to fines on speed cameras, in the first year, 200,000 was placed as fine which increased gradually to 300,000 in second year, 400,000 in third year, 500,000 in fourth year and 600,000 in fifth year. The figures then went up to 800,000 by the sixth year, rose steadily to 1,200,000 and 1,800,000 by the seventh and eighth year respectively. Furthermore, road accident fatalities stood at 3100 in first year. The figures then fluctuated throughout the year ending with 3250 people at the eighth year.
Moving to the survey result, 60% of people says installing speed camera does not reduce the number of road accidents, while 32% believes they do and 8% does not know. 71% of people think the main reason for installing the cameras was to raise revenue, 26% says it was to improve road and safety, while 3% don't know. Finally, 56% thinks the number of cameras were too many, 19% felt it was too few, 17% says that was the right amount while 8% does not know.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The report covers both graphs and all three survey questions, and its overview identifies the main contrast: fines rise sharply while fatalities fluctuate, with most respondents sceptical about cameras and revenue-raising seen as their main purpose. Most figures are reported clearly. However, several graph values are overstated: fines are about 380,000, 580,000, 780,000 and 1.6 million in years 3, 5, 6 and 8, rather than 400,000, 600,000, 800,000 and 1.8 million. Fatalities end at about 3,350, not 3,250. These inaccuracies weaken precision, although the overall trends and key survey results are accurately conveyed. For stronger coverage, report the graph values more carefully and describe the fatalities as fluctuating within a relatively narrow range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, the two graph series, and then the survey findings. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these parts, and transitions such as “Turning to” and “Moving to” make the progression easy to follow. The overview also gives the report a useful organising frame. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “The figures then” and “while” in the survey paragraph. The graph discussion could also be grouped more deliberately, with the fines trend completed before a concise comparison with fatalities. Overall, however, the information is logically ordered and the connections between points remain clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is adequate vocabulary for describing the charts and survey, including “fluctuated,” “increased gradually,” “rose steadily,” and “main reason.” These choices communicate the broad trends, and the writer varies some reporting verbs. However, several expressions are imprecise or awkward for this task: “amount of drivers” is not a natural way to describe a number of people, “CCTV” is not the label given in the task, and “placed as fine” does not clearly express the number of drivers caught or fined. “Perspectives” is understandable but less natural here than “opinions.” Greater precision in collocations and more consistent use of chart terminology would make the description more fluent and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including contrast clauses with “while” and time clauses such as “by the seventh and eighth year.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “drivers who was caught” has incorrect agreement, and “speed cameras was introduced” should use a plural verb. There are also agreement problems in “60% of people says” and “8% does not know,” as well as missing articles or plural marking in phrases such as “over eight-year period” and “in second year.” Work on subject–verb agreement, articles, and consistent plural forms; these corrections would improve accuracy while preserving the report’s clear sentence structure.
