SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph illustrates drivers of Britain who have been caught driving cars too fast by speed cameras placed on road and the number of people who have been lost their life in road accidents, in span of eight year after a installation of speed cameras.

Overall, the data of speed camera fine is rising over the eight years, while the data of peoples killed in road accidents show the constant values with little deflection. In addition there are various people's opinions on various aspects of speed cameras.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main contrast: fines rise substantially, while fatalities remain broadly stable, and you report several survey percentages accurately. However, the task is only partly covered. The third survey question—whether there are too many cameras—is omitted, and some figures are imprecise: fines in year five are about 580,000 rather than 600,000, and fatalities fluctuate around 3,100–3,350, not simply 3,000–3,400. The overview is relevant but general; it could state more clearly that fatalities do not show a sustained decline despite the sharp rise in fines. Include all three survey findings and select key comparisons more precisely to make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable report structure, with an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for the graphs and survey results. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is uneven: survey figures are inserted into paragraphs about the graphs, and the final survey finding about the number of cameras is absent, so the coverage feels incomplete. Linking phrases such as “In addition,” “After that” and “While talking about” help connect points, but some are mechanical or do not clearly signal a change of topic. Organise the report by grouping the two graph trends first, then summarising all three survey questions, with clearer references to each data set.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “dramatic rise,” “fluctuating” and “installation,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive. For example, “fine collection by drivers who caught in cameras” is unclear, while “people who have been lost their life” is an awkward way to describe fatalities. “Deflection” is not suitable for describing variation in a data series, and “the data of peoples killed” is imprecise. Aim for standard chart-reporting expressions such as “the number of drivers fined,” “road fatalities” and “remained relatively stable.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses joined with “while” and “after that,” but complex constructions are often faulty and errors occur frequently. Examples include “drivers of Britain who have been caught,” “people who have been lost their life,” and “the values lies,” which show problems with clause structure, verb forms and subject–verb agreement. Articles, plurals and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “after a installation” and “in span of eight year.” These errors sometimes make the relationships between ideas harder to follow. Practise building accurate sentences around one main comparison at a time, then check agreement, articles and verb forms before adding subordinate clauses.
