IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph compares the numbers of drivers caught for driving too fast and causing road accidents through 8 years in Britain, while the table illustrates the proportion of a survey about people's opinion on speed camera.

Overall, the number of people's death by road accident remained almost similar regarding the year, whereas the number of speed limit breakers incresed significantly.

Looking at the crime report, on the first year two hundred thousand drivers got the speed camers fines. On the other hand, more than three thousand people found death because of reckless driving. By the 8th year, the number of drivers who drives too fast reached at one million six hundred thousand, but the amount of road accident remains in a steady pace in between of 3000 to 3500 cases.

Turning to the survey table, more than half people believe that camera did not reduce road accidents, account for 60%, while 32% thinks speed camera helped controlling drivers and 8% people did not have any spacific thought. According to 71% people, speed camera is only to raise revnue, but 26% believe it is to improve road safety. More than half of people thinks there is too many camera on the roads, accounted for 56%, while 19% believes the opposite and 17% believes the amount is just right.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The report covers the main elements of the visuals and gives a clear overview: fines rose substantially, while fatalities stayed broadly stable. It also reports the key survey results, including the 60% who said cameras do not reduce accidents and the 71% who believed revenue was the main reason for their installation. The opening and overview establish the relevant comparisons, and the figures cited are generally consistent with the data. Some descriptions are imprecise: fatalities are described as remaining “in between of 3000 to 3500 cases,” rather than identifying their small fluctuations, and “causing road accidents” inaccurately suggests the drivers caught speeding caused the accidents. More precise trend language and a clearer distinction between fines and fatalities would strengthen an otherwise well-focused account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview, discussion of the graph, and discussion of the survey. The progression from the overall trends to specific figures is easy to follow, and transitions such as “On the other hand” and “Turning to the survey table” help signal changes in focus. The survey results are grouped sensibly, with each question’s responses presented together. Some linking is slightly mechanical or not quite suited to the relationship being expressed: “On the other hand” contrasts the first-year figures without a clear opposing point, and repeated use of “while” makes parts of the final paragraph feel list-like. More varied, precise connections between comparisons would make the flow smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main information, including “proportion,” “remained,” “significantly,” and “road safety.” However, word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the description less natural. Examples include “crime report” for the graph, “speed camers fines,” “revnue,” and “spacific thought.” Some phrases are also imprecise or awkward, such as “number of people’s death” and “speed limit breakers.” Use standard collocations for reporting data, such as “number of fatalities,” “drivers fined for speeding,” and “survey respondents.” Greater accuracy in spelling and more precise vocabulary would make the report clearer and more appropriate in style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a range of sentence forms, including a complex opening with “while” and comparisons using “whereas” and “but.” However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent. For example, “the number of people’s death … remained” has an incorrect noun form, “the number of drivers who drives” has faulty agreement, and “more than half people believe” is missing an article or possessive. Other examples include “reached at” and “there is too many camera.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they reduce accuracy and naturalness. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, countable nouns, and prepositions, while retaining the useful variety of sentence structures.
