IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES IN BRITAIN

The graphs demonstrate significant facts on speed camera fines and road accident fatalities in Britain for 8 years consecutively. In the 1st graph, the speed camera fines are constantly increasing throuhout the years. As the graph, this began at [redacted phone] and gradually increased till the 6th year which was [redacted phone] with a arate of [redacted phone] per year. There was a significant rise in the rate right after the 7th year started and it became [redacted phone] per year. On the other graph representing road accident fatalities , the number of individuals killed due to road accident was pacing between 3000 and 3500 throughout the 8 consecutive years. Although the fines became [redacted phone] in the 8th year, the number of road accident remain as the previous years with slightly positive change. It can be concluded from an insightful comparispn of these graphs that the speed camera fines are not evidently effective in reducing road accidents. Moreover, a relevant survey showed that most participants agreed to the previous statement while only 32% responded negatively. Majority pf the respondents think that revenue rising was the main purpose behind the installation of the cameras while 26% took it as aimed at improving road safety. 56% of the respondents claimed tge cameras are unnecessarily many . Well ,29% stressed it to be inedeqauate while 17& thought it was adquate. The rest expressed lack of enough knowledge on the issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both graphs and the survey, and your main overview—that fines rose substantially while fatalities stayed broadly stable—is relevant. The figures of 200,000 at the start and 1,600,000 in year eight, and the range of roughly 3,000–3,500 fatalities, are broadly consistent with the visual. However, some details are inaccurate: fines reached about 780,000 in year six, not 800,000, and the sharp rise to 1,180,000 occurs in year seven, rather than after it starts. In the survey, 60% said cameras did not reduce accidents, but you describe this group as agreeing with that statement and then say 32% responded negatively, reversing the response labels. The final survey figures are also misreported: 19%, not 29%, said there were too few cameras. Clarify these points and develop the overview more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a generally understandable sequence: it describes the two graphs, draws a comparison, and then reports the survey. Phrases such as “On the other graph” and “Moreover” help signal movement between topics. However, the information is compressed into one long paragraph, so the report lacks clear stages and the survey results become difficult to follow. Some links are also unclear or misleading: “the previous statement” does not clearly identify which survey question you mean, and “Although the fines became 1600000” creates a contrast without explaining it smoothly. Use separate paragraphs for the graph overview and survey, and group each survey question with its results. More precise referencing and transitions would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “speed camera fines,” “road accident fatalities,” “installation,” and “revenue,” and you attempt more formal expressions such as “significant rise” and “insightful comparison.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for a data report: “pacing between” should describe figures that fluctuated or remained within a range, while “the rate became 400000 per year” does not clearly express the change in fines. Spelling errors such as “throuhout,” “comparispn,” “inadeqauate,” and “adquate” are noticeable, and “unnecessarily many” is awkward. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language and check spelling carefully; this will make your meaning clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a comparison introduced by “Although” and a concluding sentence beginning “It can be concluded.” However, errors in sentence construction and punctuation sometimes make the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “As the graph, this began at 200000” is incomplete or incorrectly formed, and “There was a significant rise in the rate right after the 7th year started and it became 400000 per year” has an unclear subject and awkward clause connection. There are also missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent comma spacing. Practise writing complete sentences with clear subjects, accurate verb forms, and controlled punctuation; divide long sentences when they contain several separate data points.
