IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The graph tracks information of over eight years after installation of speed cameras in Britain, individuals who have been caught driving with no limit and of the people be killed by road accidents.
The data shows that the speed camera fines in over 8 years were reached from 200,000 to 1,600,000. The road accident fatalities data illustrates that in these eight years accidents rate fluctuated but remain the same around 3000.
The survey explicitly record from the citizens,in which three questions asked. By the survey's findings, the speeding cameras has not impacted the ratio of road accidents on which majority agreed, whereas the major factor to install camera was raising the revenue on which more than half candidates and then less than half agreed on, to improve road safety. The opinion about the numbers of speed cameras on the road on which data was mixed but majority agreed with several cameras.
Overall, survey indicates the mixed review regarding the speed cameras placed on the roads and it the majorly contributes in to the revenue of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main contrast: fines rose substantially, while fatalities stayed broadly around 3,000, and you include the survey’s three topics. However, several details are inaccurate or too vague. Fatalities did not simply “remain the same”: they fluctuated from about 3,100 to 3,350, ending slightly higher than they began. The survey results also need precise reporting: 60% said cameras do not reduce accidents, 71% thought revenue was the main reason, and 56% considered there to be too many cameras. “The data was mixed” obscures these clear majorities, and “majority agreed with several cameras” misrepresents the response. A clearer overview and accurate comparisons would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to the graph trends, then the survey and a concluding overview. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement. Some progression is weakened by unclear links and references, however. For example, “on which majority agreed” does not clearly identify which survey response is being discussed, and the sentence beginning “By the survey’s findings” combines several results without separating them. The final paragraph repeats the idea of mixed opinions rather than adding a distinct summary. Organise the survey findings into clearer comparisons, use explicit references such as “60% of respondents,” and ensure the conclusion summarises the key patterns rather than restating an unclear claim.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “installation,” “revenue,” and “road safety,” so the reader can follow the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate enough to make parts difficult to interpret. “Driving with no limit” does not express being caught speeding, while “the people be killed” and “the ratio of road accidents” are not natural descriptions of the data. Phrases such as “mixed review” and “several cameras” are also imprecise in context. Aim for standard chart-report language and accurate collocations, for example “drivers caught speeding,” “fatalities,” and “respondents considered the number too high.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a contrast between the graph trends and a sentence describing the survey. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “the people be killed” needs a correctly formed passive, and “the speeding cameras has not impacted” has subject–verb disagreement. The sentence beginning “The survey explicitly record” also has an incorrect verb form and an incomplete construction around “in which three questions asked.” Use complete, direct sentences and check that subjects agree with verbs; practise passive forms such as “people were killed” and reporting structures such as “The survey asked three questions.”
