IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The illustration shows the number of drivers fined for driving recklessly on roads and people killed due to road accidents after the invention of speed cameras over a long duration of eight years.
Since the speed camera got introduced, recekless drivers got fined in most cases. This kept increasing over the long eight years starting from the first year at 200,000 and reached upto [redacted phone] in the eighth year. Inspite of the introduction of speed cameras, fatalities of road accidents did not decline at all and stayed in the same rate all through the eight years.
The survey displays the similar situation and outcomes which implies that speed cameras could not help reducing the numbers of accidents on roads as majority people disagreed(60%) about it. A huge amount of people considers raising revenue as the main reason for installation of camera rather than road safety improvement. Despite having several number of cameras on road as per people, road accidents could not be lessened.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main contrast: fines rose sharply, while fatalities did not show a sustained decline, and you include relevant survey findings such as the 60% who said cameras do not reduce accidents and the 71% who thought revenue was the main purpose. However, the report covers the survey only selectively: it omits the responses about camera numbers (56% said there were too many, while 19% said too few and 17% about right). The description of fatalities as staying “in the same rate” is broadly accurate but too general; the figures fluctuate between roughly 3,100 and 3,350, so a brief comparison of their high and low points would be more informative. Add a clear overview and report the key survey proportions more completely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable sequence: it introduces the charts, describes the two trends, and then turns to the survey. This gives the reader a basic overall structure. However, the progression within the final paragraph is less clear: “The survey displays the similar situation and outcomes” does not specify which results are being linked, and the concluding sentence repeats the idea that cameras have not reduced accidents rather than adding a distinct summary. Connections such as “By contrast” or “Regarding public opinion” could make the shifts between the graph and survey clearer. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs for the overview, chart trends and survey findings, and ensure each sentence advances a specific point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “fatalities,” “installation,” “revenue” and “road safety,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward for a formal data report. “Driving recklessly” changes the task’s meaning, which concerns speeding; “in most cases” is unclear, and “stayed in the same rate” is not a natural way to describe fluctuating figures. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “recekless,” “upto” and “Inspite.” Aim for precise chart language such as “the number of drivers caught speeding,” “rose steadily,” and “fluctuated within a narrow range.” This would make the description clearer and more appropriately academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example, “Despite having several number of cameras on road as per people, road accidents could not be lessened.” However, control is uneven, particularly in longer constructions. In “as majority people disagreed(60%) about it,” the article and punctuation are missing, and the sentence does not clearly identify what respondents disagreed with. “The survey displays the similar situation” also has an article error, while “people considers” has subject–verb disagreement. Some sentence patterns are understandable, but these recurring issues make parts of the report less clear. Practise accurate articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, and use simpler structures when a longer sentence becomes difficult to control.
