IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.0)

THE GRAPHS ILLUSTRATES NUMBER OF DRIVERS IN UK HAVE BEEN CAUGHT WHILE DRIVING TOO FAST BY SPEED CAMERAS. WHICH ARE PLASED ON ROADS, AND THE MOST OF THE PEOPLE KILLED BY ROAD ACCIDENTS, OVER AN EIGHT-YEAR PERIOD.

HERE WE HAVE TWO SURVEYS BASED ON THE SPEED CAMERA FINES AND ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES. THE SPEED CAMERA FINES ARE RAISING EVERY YEAR AND THE ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES WAS ALWAYS FLUACTUATING YEAR BY YEAR.

IN MY VIEW THE SPEED CAMERA FINES WILL NOT DECREASE THE ACCIDENTS RATES, BEACUSE THEY SIMPLY PAYING THE AMOUNT AND DOING SAME LIKE BEFORE, IT IS QUIT EFFECTABLE BUT NOT THE EFFICIENT SOLUTION. WE NEED TO DEVELOPE ROADS SAFETY PROPERLY LIKE INCREASING SPEED-BREAKER, TRAFFIC SIGNALS AND SPEED LIMIT AND ROAD CONDITION REFLECTION BOARDS, BEACUSE THESE ARE USED TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BY DRIVERS.

THE MAIN REASON FOR INSTALLING SPEED CAMERAS IS TO RAISE REVENUE I REALLY AGREE WITH THESE BEACUSE ALMOST 71% ARE BROOKING THAT ONLY. AND I THINK MOST NUMBER OF SPEED CAMERAS ON ROADS ARE TOO MANY BEACUSE THE GOVERMENTS SHOULD GENERATING MONEY WITH THESE.

IN MY OPINION THERE IS NO PROPER USE OF SPEED CAMERA TO CONTROL AND DEACRESE ROAD ACCIDENTS FATALITIES.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad contrast that fines rise while fatalities fluctuate, and you report the survey’s key finding that 71% see revenue as the main reason for cameras. However, this is only a partial report of the visual information. The response gives no figures or year-by-year comparisons for either graph, and it omits the survey results on whether cameras reduce accidents (60% said no) and whether there are too many cameras (56%). Instead, much of the response gives personal opinions and recommendations about road safety, which are not requested in this academic report. Include a concise overview, then select and compare the main trends and survey proportions without adding personal arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the response moves from an introduction to broad graph trends, then to opinions about cameras and a concluding view. However, the progression is not consistently clear because the report shifts from describing the data to arguing for speed breakers, signals and road improvements. The survey findings are also mixed with personal commentary rather than grouped and compared systematically. Linking phrases such as “In my view” and “In my opinion” are repeated, while connections between the graphs and the survey are not clearly explained. Use separate paragraphs for the graph overview and the survey results, and organise details in a logical order. This would make the report easier to follow and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “speed cameras,” “road accident fatalities,” “raise revenue” and “road safety,” so the subject is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or spellings make parts difficult to interpret, such as “fluactuating,” “effectable,” “brooking” and “deacrese.” Some phrases are also unnatural, including “the most of the people killed” and “generating money with these.” Aim for precise language for describing data, such as “increased steadily,” “remained broadly stable” and “accounted for.” Check spelling and use standard collocations; avoid replacing data description with informal or unclear expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

There are attempts to form longer sentences, but control is weak and errors occur frequently, sometimes making the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “The graphs illustrates” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the road accident fatalities was” uses an incorrect verb form and agreement. The opening sentence is a fragment, and “because they simply paying the amount and doing same like before” lacks the necessary auxiliary and articles. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent, with long clauses joined without clear structure. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses. For example: “Fines rose each year, whereas fatalities fluctuated.” Check agreement, verb forms and articles when editing.
