IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graphs below show the data of the voilations carried by the drivers in Britain who have been captured driving too fast by speed cameras which were kept on roads, and it also shows the record of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of these speed cameras. As well as the tables provided the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

In the first two graphs, the data reflects regarding the traffic fines and ratio of road accidents. From the first year, the speed camera caught people who violated the traffic laws were in 200,000and it rose up around 1,600,00 over the period of 8 yeras. On the other hands, we can clearly see the increased number of road traffic accidents and fatalities due to fast driving and over speeding i.e from 3000 to 3500 from past eight years.

The last three surveys gave us the information regarding the people thinking about the road accidents and speed violations. 32% of people think that there is reduction in accidents due to presence of speed cameras, while 60% said there is no change, other 8% filled ou the infromation with they dont know about this. Similarly, in the 2nd question of the survey 26% of people expressed that speed cameras are for road safety, 71% claimed its raised the revenue while other 3% said dont know. Aditionally, in question 3, 56% said they found too many speed cameras, 19% checked with few cameras as well as 8% of them claimed they don't know about the speed cameras.

In conclusion, drivers should follow the traffic rules to avoild the casualities and financial loses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You cover both graphs and all three survey questions, and several figures are reported accurately, including the rise in fines from about 200,000 to 1.6 million and the survey’s 32% and 60% responses. However, the account of fatalities is inaccurate: these fluctuate around 3,100–3,350 rather than showing a clear increase from 3,000 to 3,500, and the response incorrectly attributes the pattern to speeding. The survey’s 17% “about right” result is omitted. The final advice about following traffic rules is not a data-based overview. To make the report more complete, summarise the contrasting trends accurately and identify the main survey findings without adding unsupported explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable sequence: an introduction, discussion of the graphs, a paragraph on the survey, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand,” “Similarly,” and “In conclusion” help signal movement between points. However, progression within the report is sometimes unclear: the graph paragraph combines fines and fatalities without clearly separating their trends, while the survey paragraph becomes a long sequence of percentages. Some linking is mechanical, and references such as “the last three surveys” are imprecise. Organise the information into clearer comparisons, use one paragraph for the graphs and another for the survey, and make each paragraph’s main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “speed cameras,” “road safety,” “revenue,” and “fatalities,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “violations carried by the drivers,” “the data reflects regarding,” and “claimed its raised the revenue.” Spelling errors—including “voilations,” “yeras,” “infromation,” and “casualities”—also make the writing less clear and polished. Aim for precise, conventional report language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe drivers as “caught speeding,” say that fines “rose,” and refer to respondents who “believed” cameras were intended to raise revenue.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts longer sentences and uses clauses with “while” and “as well as,” but control is inconsistent, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “the speed camera caught people who violated the traffic laws were in 200,000” has an unclear sentence structure, while “60% said there is no change” shifts awkwardly between reported speech and present tense. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and punctuation, as in “other 8% filled out the information with they dont know.” Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine related points with correctly formed clauses and consistent past-tense reporting.
