IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The information in both graphs is showing the number of people killed in road accidents and the speed camera fines. We can see that there is no increase or decrease in the number of road accidents as the graph line is in a linear style. But the graph of speed camera fines has changed from bottom to top in a curve style.

The survey report is describing the percentages of answers given by different people. There were different questions such as the opinion about the installation of speed cameras, reason, and the numbers as well. People in this survey responded differently, depending upon their thinking and opinions.

When they were asked about the reduction in the number of road accidents with the help of speed cameras. 60 percent of the respondents said no and 32 percent of the respondents said yes. As more people don't think that the road accidents are reducing in number particularly because of the speed cameras.

These respondents said that the main reason for the installation of speed cameras is to raise revenue only and 21 percent of the respondents said that the main reason is to improve road safety. The respondents also answered that they can see too many speed cameras on the road as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the two chart topics and report some key survey findings, including that 60% reject the idea that cameras reduce accidents and that 32% agree. However, the report only partially covers the visual data: it gives no figures for the trends in either graph, and the overview that fatalities show “no increase or decrease” is too broad because the line fluctuates, ending slightly higher than it begins. The fines rise substantially, but this is not quantified. There are also factual omissions and an error: 71%, not 21%, said the main purpose was raising revenue; the response does not report the 56% who think there are too many cameras. Include a concise overview and select accurate figures from both charts and all survey questions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it first introduces the graphs, then the survey, and later discusses survey answers. However, there is no clear overall progression through the information, and the first two paragraphs remain general rather than guiding the reader through the main comparisons. Linking is limited and sometimes repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “respondents” and “the survey.” The sentence beginning “When they were asked…” is a fragment, while “As more people…” does not connect clearly to the preceding point. Group the graph trends together, then organise the survey findings by question, using clear transitions such as “By contrast” or “Regarding the perceived purpose.” This would make the report easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to identify the main topics, using phrases such as “road accidents,” “speed camera fines,” and “raise revenue.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for describing data. “The graph line is in a linear style” does not clearly describe the small fluctuations in fatalities, while “changed from bottom to top in a curve style” is vague and informal. “Survey report” and “depending upon their thinking and opinions” are also awkward or repetitive. Use precise chart language such as “fluctuated,” “rose steadily,” and “the proportion of respondents.” Take care to distinguish the survey’s stated figures accurately; vocabulary cannot compensate for reporting the wrong percentage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses some simple sentences and attempts longer structures, but grammatical control is inconsistent. For example, “The information in both graphs is showing” uses an awkward progressive construction, and “When they were asked about the reduction…” is an incomplete subordinate clause. The sentence “As more people don't think…” is also not a complete, clearly connected statement. There are problems with articles and number agreement in “the numbers as well,” and the phrasing around “the main reason … is to raise revenue only” makes the relationship between the ideas difficult to follow. Aim for complete sentences and use straightforward reporting structures, such as “Sixty per cent said that cameras do not reduce accidents.” Check clause boundaries and verb forms when combining ideas.
