IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given line graph illustrate information about the numbers of citizens killed in road accidents. The data divided into 2 areas one is speed camera fines and other is road accident fatalities.

At the outset, it is crystal clear that speed camera fines show upward trend in first year number of fines were recorded [redacted phone] which gradually increased by [redacted phone] in second year. In third, fourth and fifth year a marginal growth can be estimated was [redacted phone], [redacted phone] and [redacted phone] respectively. Speed camera fines observed [redacted phone] in sixth year, converesly in seventh year a significant incline recorded was 1,200,000 in speed camera fines. Moreover it reaches to 1,60,000 in eight year.

Moving towards remaining data, number of road accident occure in britain show minor fluctatuation throughout entire period in first year road accident obsered 3000. It increases gradual reached approximately 3500, while decline can estimated observed 3000 in fourth year. Further gradual incline can recorded below 3500 in eight year.

Overall, speed camera fines show upward direction, while road accident fatalities remain same a marginal difference can recorded.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The report identifies the broad contrast between the two series: fines rise, while fatalities fluctuate around a similar level. However, the description contains substantial inaccuracies that make the data difficult to assess. For example, fines in year eight are given as “1,60,000,” rather than approximately 1,600,000, and the year-three figure is stated as 400,000 instead of about 380,000. The fatalities are also misreported: the first year is around 3,150, not 3,000, and the series does not reach approximately 3,500. The survey results, which form a major part of the task, are omitted entirely. Include the key survey findings and report the main trends and figures more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on fines, a paragraph on fatalities, and a brief overall statement. This helps the reader distinguish the two graph series, and transitions such as “Moving towards remaining data” signal a change of focus. However, the progression is weakened by unclear or awkward links, including “In third, fourth and fifth year a marginal growth can be estimated was…” and “while decline can estimated observed…”. The overview comes only at the end and repeats the trend rather than bringing the main comparisons together. The tables are not incorporated, so the report’s organisation is incomplete. Use clearer topic sentences and group the most important graph and survey information into a logical sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of trend vocabulary, including “upward trend,” “marginal growth,” “significant incline,” and “fluctuation,” which is appropriate for describing charts. Some choices, however, are inaccurate or unnatural: “converesly” appears to mean “conversely,” “incline” is less suitable than “increase” here, and “road accident occure” does not express the intended idea clearly. Spelling errors such as “fluctatuation” and “obsered” also reduce precision. In addition, “1,60,000” is an unclear number format. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language and check spelling and number presentation. A smaller set of well-controlled terms such as “rose steadily,” “climbed sharply,” and “fluctuated slightly” would make the account clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts longer sentences and some subordinate structures, but grammatical control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in “The given line graph illustrate” and “number of road accident occure,” while several clauses lack the structure needed to express a complete comparison, as in “a marginal growth can be estimated was 400000.” Articles and plurals are also often missing, for example “in eight year” and “in first year.” Punctuation is unreliable: there is no space after the full stop in “accidents. The,” and commas are used without consistent spacing. These problems sometimes make relationships between figures unclear. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses using “while” or “whereas.”
