IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There are 2 graphs given . Both the graphs have a record of 8 years. One shows the speed camera fines from [redacted phone] to [redacted phone] and the other shows road accident fatalities from 500 to 3500.

The speed camera fines have been increased every year by approximately 1 lakh. The road accident fatalities are ranged above 3000 from year 1 and it has not gone below 3000 a single time in 8 years. This is a very serious concern.

Below the graph , the result of the survey on people's opinion on speed camera is given in percentage. The survey had asked 3 questions and given 3 or 4 options to tell their opinion. The opinion is showed in percentage for the number of people agreeing to which option.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the two graphs and notes the broad contrast that fines rise while fatalities remain above 3,000. However, it does not give a clear overview of the survey findings or report any of the survey percentages, so a major part of the task is left unaddressed. The claim that fines increased by “approximately 1 lakh” each year is also inaccurate: the annual rises vary considerably, and the total climbs from about 200,000 to 1.6 million. The statement that fatalities never fell below 3,000 is broadly correct, but the response gives little detail about their fluctuations. The report is also 22 words below the required minimum. To improve, summarise the main patterns and include key comparisons from all three survey questions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, understandable structure: it first introduces the graphs, then comments on their trends, and finally refers to the survey. This gives the reader some sense of progression. However, the final paragraph only describes the survey format rather than presenting its results, so the organisation does not fully serve the reporting purpose. Connections between ideas are limited, and the transition from the graphs to the survey is abrupt. The sentence “This is a very serious concern” also introduces an evaluative comment that is not developed or clearly linked to the data. Use a concise overview followed by separate, logically ordered paragraphs for the graph trends and survey results, with clear links such as “By contrast” and “Regarding the survey.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the main subjects, using terms such as “speed camera fines,” “road accident fatalities,” “survey,” and “percentage.” Some wording is repetitive or imprecise for a formal data report. For example, “have been increased every year” does not clearly describe the changing figures, while “the opinion is showed in percentage” is awkward and unclear. “A record of 8 years” is also not a natural way to describe the period shown. The phrase “very serious concern” adds an unsupported evaluative tone rather than precise description. Aim for accurate reporting language and varied verbs for trends, such as “rose,” “fluctuated,” and “remained above.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses mostly simple sentence patterns, with a few attempts to combine ideas, and its general meaning is usually understandable. However, grammatical errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “The road accident fatalities are ranged above 3000” has an incorrect verb construction; “it has not gone below 3000 a single time in 8 years” has unclear agreement and phrasing; and “The opinion is showed” uses an incorrect passive form. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, such as the missing space after the full stop in “years.This.” Practise accurate present-tense descriptions and passive forms, and use a wider range of correctly controlled sentence structures.
