IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.
Do you agree or disagree?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
In some societies, it is thought that everyone can work in the art industry. While some believe that this may result in talented artists being underappreciated, I would argue that individuals who are truly good at drawing or painting can always be noticed by society.
On the one hand, it must be considered that an increasing number of people have started showing their artworks online and have been trying to benefit from the internet. For this reason, it is understandable why some artists are struggling to make ends meet; the more money made by others, the less money made by them. That phenomenon, though, does not necessarily indicate that real artists and artworks are not valued. In contrast, a more competitive market may even generate more talented artists as they have to compete with more people.
On the other hand, due to the fact that more people are entering this industry, talented artists have more opportunities to become famous in society as long as they are genuinely skilled. To illustrate this: a YouTube video, which records the process of an artist's painting, went viral several months ago, which exposed that artist to the public; whereas in the past the same artist with the same painting might have been ignored by others as the art industry was not accessible. Additionally, regardless of the talent, more people working in this industry can always bring more inspiration, which is the nature of the arts.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that a more competitive market makes some artists experience hardships; but the attitude of "anyone can do it" not only enables us to see who is truly talented but also helps more talented artists be seen by the general public. Therefore, I disagree with the statement that talented individuals are not valued.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have clearly addressed all parts of the prompt and maintained a consistent position throughout the essay. Your argument is well-structured, and you provide logical reasoning to support your disagreement with the premise. For example, your point about the internet acting as a meritocratic filter for talent is a strong, relevant idea. To reach a higher band, you could further develop your examples; while the mention of a viral YouTube video is good, providing a more detailed or hypothetical scenario would strengthen the depth of your analysis. Overall, your ideas are well-extended and directly relevant to the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use paragraphing effectively to separate your arguments, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'For this reason', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through your argument. The flow between sentences is generally smooth. To improve, ensure that the transition between your counter-argument and your own position is even more seamless. The current structure is clear, but a slightly more sophisticated use of referencing could enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'make ends meet', 'competitive market', and 'genuinely skilled' are used accurately. You show an awareness of collocation and style, which allows you to convey your ideas clearly. While your vocabulary is adequate and effective, it lacks the 'less common' or more sophisticated idiomatic items that would characterize a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more nuanced synonyms or academic collocations to add variety to your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Your control over grammar is generally good, and most of your sentences are error-free, which ensures that your meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'That phenomenon, though, does not necessarily indicate...', which is grammatically acceptable but slightly informal. Your use of punctuation is generally accurate. To achieve a higher score, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or more advanced passive constructions, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
