IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The proposition of learning life skills such as automobile repair or banking by pupils has become increasingly common. This is because it boosts their curriculum vitae and makes them self-sufficient, which help them avoid formidable situations in life.

The primary catalyst is it prepares them for future employment by giving real-life experiences. Since they can apply the knowledge learnt in the classroom to these hands-on activities, they learn communication and problem solving skills which are valued by potential employers. In addition, learning these skills equips them to face the real world situations, which consequently boosts their confidence and makes them self-reliant. For instance, in 2024, an experiment was conducted in Canada which showcased that having vocational training at school level doubles the prospects of getting recruited in multinational companies.

Despite the above-mentioned reason, there are some people who argue that schools are not the right place to acquire these skills, they have their viewpoint. The contributing factor is that giving time to such learning would hamper their academic growth. To elaborate, they are of the mindset that pupils should focus on strengthening their academic portfolio rather than wasting their time on learning practical skills which can also be learnt at home from their parents or siblings after school. Nevertheless, I still believe vocational training enhances a learner’s resume.

In conclusion, gaining life skills not only improves employability but also prepares learners to get valuable experience in all spheres of life by making them independent. I agree that vocational training can be an integral part of the curriculum in all the schools.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on the 'anyone can do it' attitude in the arts, specifically regarding talent and fame. However, your essay discusses the benefits of vocational training, such as automobile repair and banking, in schools. Because you have not addressed the actual prompt provided, the task achievement score is significantly impacted. To improve, you must carefully read the prompt and ensure your arguments directly relate to the specific topic of the arts and talent. You have written a coherent essay, but it is a response to an entirely different question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Despite being off-topic, the essay is well-structured. You use clear paragraphing and logical progression. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary catalyst', 'In addition', 'Despite the above-mentioned reason', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through your argument. The ideas within each paragraph are logically sequenced, and the transition between the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion is smooth. If the content had matched the prompt, this would be a strong performance in terms of organization and flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including terms like 'proposition', 'formidable', 'catalyst', 'vocational training', and 'integral'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic context. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is well-suited for the topic you chose to write about, it is unfortunate that it does not address the actual task. With a more relevant topic, your lexical range would likely support a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as 'Since they can apply the knowledge learnt in the classroom to these hands-on activities, they learn communication and problem solving skills which are valued by potential employers.' Your control of grammar is generally strong, with only minor slips. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the text. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you show a good command of complex grammatical forms. Like the other criteria, your grammatical performance is solid, but it is applied to an irrelevant topic.
