You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Art like music , literature and acting are important parts of society's culture. Unfortunately generally they are not appreciated in the modern scientific world and not regarded as a talent. This issue is very interesting and a topic of common debate among different groups of society. Many people think that people become rich without talent but actual talent is not valued.

In the modern world art and science go side by side. Scientific fields are generally more rewarding as they provide for the immediate needs and luxurious lifestyle for the human race. Todays world is more materialistic and nations are more focused towards economic developments. Art is considered less important, people usually look down at people with artistic talents and think their qualities can be acquired by anyone and they do not deserve money or fame. This attitude creates a discrimination in many fields of life and in education system. Young generations are particularly affected by this social behavior and adopt science as a career.

Art is gradually becoming scarce. The qualities of acting, painting, literature and music have declined as compared to the past. There is also change in the upbringing of new generation. More importance is given to achieve skills and scientific education.

In conclusion, art is equally important as science. Art represents a culture and society. Artistic work give identity to different civilizations in the world. The talents of art can not be gained by everyone and need to be promoted for a culture of society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt but fails to fully develop the argument. While you acknowledge the debate, you do not clearly state your own position (whether you agree or disagree) until the very end, and even then, it is somewhat vague. The ideas regarding the materialistic nature of society are relevant, but they are not sufficiently supported with concrete examples or evidence. Furthermore, the response falls one word short of the 250-word minimum, which is a negative constraint. To improve, ensure you take a clear stance in the introduction and provide specific, illustrative examples to support your claims rather than relying on generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is abrupt. While you use some linking words like 'In conclusion' and 'Unfortunately', the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive markers to better connect your ideas. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks the depth required for a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'materialistic', 'economic developments', and 'civilizations'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat basic words. There are also minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'adopt science as a career' (which would be better phrased as 'pursue a career in science'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise, less common vocabulary and idiomatic expressions related to the arts and societal values.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Art like music, literature and acting are' (subject-verb agreement error: 'Art' is singular) and 'Artistic work give identity' (should be 'gives'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately.
