You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Nowadays, social media and digital platforms have created the impression that anyone can become successful in the arts. It is often argued that many people without exceptional talent can gain fame and wealth through popularity. However, I strongly disagree to this statement because talent, skill and originality remain important for lasting success.
It is true that Social media rewards popularity, but not necessarily talent. We cannot deny this reality that platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube prioritize content that gets views, likes and shares. People can become famous because of appearance, controversy, humour or trends rather than artistic ability. A prime example of this can be person may become a viral singer despite having limited vocal ability simply because their song becomes a trend.
Another important reason is that commercial success can be based on marketing. Strong advertising and a large online following can make an artist successful. Companies may invest in popular personalities because they can attract audiences and sell products. Therefore, fame and wealth are not always evidence of artistic talent.
On the other hand, genuine talent is still valued today. Talent is necessary for long-term success. Trends are usually short-lived, whereas genuinely skilled artists can maintain their careers for years. Musicians need musical ability, writers need strong language and storytelling skills, and actors need performance skills. Audiences eventually recognize quality and originality.
Modern technology also gives talented people more opportunities. In the past, artists often needed approval from publishers, record companies or producers. Today, talented individuals can publish their work independently on YouTube, Spotify, Instagram, self-publishing platforms, etc. This means talented but unknown people can reach a global audience without traditional gatekeepers.
Taking everything into consideration, I have conclude that we should admit that modern media can sometimes make popularity more important than talent. But this does not mean genuine talent is no longer appreciated. Fame may be achieved without exceptional talent, but lasting recognition and respect in the arts still depend heavily on skill, creativity and originality.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all parts of the prompt, clearly stating your disagreement with the premise that talent is no longer valued. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. You provide relevant arguments regarding the role of social media and marketing versus the necessity of skill for long-term success. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between short-lived viral fame and sustainable careers. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, real-world examples of artists who have succeeded through talent versus those who relied on trends, which would further strengthen your supporting evidence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the impact of social media, the role of marketing, and the enduring value of talent. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'However,' 'Therefore,' and 'On the other hand,' which help guide the reader through your arguments. The progression of ideas is smooth and logical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the negative aspects of modern media and the positive opportunities it provides for talented individuals is handled well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic essay, using terms like 'gatekeepers,' 'sustain their careers,' and 'artistic ability.' There is a good level of precision in your word choice. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas clearly, it occasionally leans toward common phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions related to the arts and media industry. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and your use of terminology is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Your control over grammar is generally strong, with many error-free sentences. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I strongly disagree to this statement' (should be 'with') and 'a prime example of this can be person may become' (which is grammatically awkward). Despite these occasional slips, your meaning is always clear, and your punctuation is generally accurate. The use of complex structures, such as conditional or concessive clauses, shows a good command of English grammar suitable for this level.
