IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the art scene, more individuals are gaining fame and wealth despite having limited skills in this field. This results to debate as some people believe that genuine artistic talents are being overlooked and undervalued because of this prevailing trend in some nations. While I partially hold the same view, I also believe that this is highly a result of a shift in inclusivity and innovation in the arts and media sector.

I would argue that with the prevalence of the digital industry, more people are becoming inspired to create contents as a form of entertainment and an avenue to procure income. For instance, social networking sites like TikTok and Instagram are now swarmed with video bloggers because of its convenient access to a wide array of audience. Viewers are often more appreciative of this kinds of artistic expressions as they often find it simple, relatable, and charismatic.

In addition, there are also a lot of editing platforms and applications nowadays where you can learn and practice artistic skills in graphic design despite having no inherent talent. The digital age created a more inclusive space for people to explore creativity regardless of having limited skills or no foundation at all. A downside, however, could involve the use of monetary sponsorship to market these art forms and gain popularity, which could therefore undermine the appreciation for the true artists in the field.

I believe that while bonafide artists and those with naturalistic inclinations for art are often underrated, they are still valued in creative spaces or stages that are rather less commercialized. In some sense, they also serve inspiration to aspiring talents as most often seen in appropriated works of art today.

In conclusion, I would agree that true talents for the arts has somehow become undervalued which can be attributed to technological innovations and the shifting art appreciation of people in mass media in the present.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt well, maintaining a clear position throughout. You acknowledge the trend of 'anyone can do it' while providing a balanced view regarding inclusivity and digital innovation. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the mention of social media platforms and editing software. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are more deeply explored; for instance, you could contrast a specific 'genuine' artist with a 'viral' personality to provide more concrete evidence. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, though it could be more assertive in reinforcing the main argument regarding the devaluation of traditional talent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the role of digital platforms or the impact of editing tools. Cohesive devices like 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow. For example, the link between the second and third paragraphs could be strengthened to better connect the concept of 'content creation' with 'technical editing tools'. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'naturalistic inclinations', 'bonafide artists', and 'prevailing trend' show an awareness of style. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'results to debate' (should be 'results in') and 'create contents' (content is an uncountable noun here). While you attempt to use less common items, some word choices are slightly imprecise. To improve, focus on collocations and ensure that you are using academic vocabulary in the correct context. The range is adequate for the task, but more sophisticated control would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate control over complex sentences, such as 'While I partially hold the same view, I also believe that this is highly a result of a shift...'. There are occasional errors, such as 'this kinds of artistic expressions' (should be 'these kinds') and 'they also serve inspiration' (should be 'serve as inspiration'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and these minor errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, aim for a greater variety of complex structures and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement throughout the text.
