IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Arts such as music, literature, acting, and the visual arts are overshadowed in many cultures today. Therefore, untalented individuals or overnight sensations achieve fame without merit. I largely agree that the arts as a subject and passion are underappreciated in many regions, which enables mediocre performers to gain recognition.

In the past, artists devoted years to mastering the craft. Their art comprised attention to detail and had a story behind every piece of art or music. The mentors placed greater emphasis on discipline, such as shaping a clear mindset, even if they expressed something complicated, practicing more and more, and loving what you do. Literature, music, and art were encouraged by royals as well as commoners. But now, it is overlooked by funders and connoisseurs. That is why artistic integrity is lost in our century.

The growing emphasis on STEM disciplines has diverted both funding and public attention. Almost half of the students are forced to study science subjects. Students with interest do not get admission to the university as they cannot afford it. Moreover, many universities do not offer these subjects. They have to move out of their city or country to learn authentic skills.

The growing influence of digital platforms has shifted public attention from artistic merit to online popularity. The viral content is often driven by entertainment value rather than artistic excellence.

In conclusion, although anyone should have the freedom to pursue the arts, success should be determined by dedication and genuine talent. The world should nurture authentic art, literary works, and craftsmanship more to preserve cultural heritage for future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position on the 'anyone can do it' attitude in the arts. You successfully identify the shift from traditional mastery to digital popularity. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the point about digital platforms is relevant, the paragraph regarding STEM disciplines feels slightly tangential; it explains why arts education is struggling but does not directly address why 'unqualified' people are becoming famous. To reach a higher band, ensure every paragraph directly supports your central argument about the devaluation of genuine talent versus the rise of mediocre fame.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between the historical context and the modern STEM argument could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the logical progression between sentences is more seamless rather than relying on simple sentence-initial connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'artistic integrity', 'connoisseurs', and 'authentic skills'. There is an attempt to use less common items, which is positive. However, some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'overshadowed in many cultures' or 'shaping a clear mindset'. The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but to achieve a higher score, you should aim for more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, and your control of grammar is generally good. However, there are minor slips, such as 'anyone should have the freedom' (where 'everyone' might be more precise) and some slightly awkward phrasing in the second paragraph regarding 'practicing more and more'. Punctuation is generally accurate. To move to a higher band, incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you currently display.
