IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.
Do you agree or disagree?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, there is a growing belief that anyone can become successful in the arts, such as music, literature, acting and painting. As a result, some people who have little talent can become rich and famous, while genuinely talented people may receive less attention. I disagree with this view because real talent is still important, although social media can sometimes make less-talented people popular.
One reason why I disagree is that genuine talent and hard work are essential for long-term success in the arts. People who have natural abilities usually spend many years developing their skills through practice and experience. For example, a talented singer may practise regularly to improve their voice and performance skills. Similarly, a successful writer needs creativity and strong language skills to produce good books. Although such people may not become famous immediately, their quality of work can help them gain respect and build a successful career over time.
On the other hand, it is true that social media has made it easier for people without exceptional talent to become famous. Today, anyone can upload videos, photographs or other content and attract millions of viewers. Some people become popular because of their appearance, lifestyle, humour or controversial behaviour rather than their artistic ability. For instance, a person can become famous after a short video goes viral, even if they do not have any special artistic skills. However, this type of popularity is often temporary, and many such people struggle to maintain their success in the long term.
In conclusion, although modern technology and social media can allow people with limited talent to become rich and famous, I believe genuine talent is still highly valued. People with real ability, combined with dedication and hard work, are more likely to achieve lasting success and respect in the arts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with a logical distinction between the necessity of hard work for long-term success and the temporary nature of social media fame. You provided relevant examples, such as the singer and the viral video creator, to support your arguments. The conclusion effectively synthesises your main points. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your arguments by discussing the societal impact of this trend or providing a more specific real-world example of an artist who achieved success through traditional merit.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the argument for talent and the counter-argument regarding social media is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One reason why', 'Similarly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is easy to follow. The referencing is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a professional tone. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which demonstrates a high level of control.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases such as 'long-term success', 'exceptional talent', 'artistic ability', and 'lasting success' are used accurately. You show an awareness of collocation and style. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterise a band 8 or 9 response. However, there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the language used is consistently natural and fits the context of the discussion well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'although' clauses and conditional-like structures. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. You use a mix of simple and complex forms effectively to convey your ideas. There are no significant grammatical errors that distract the reader. To move into the highest band, you could incorporate a wider variety of advanced grammatical structures, such as inversion or more sophisticated passive constructions, while maintaining the current high level of accuracy.
