In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In many countries, there is a growing belief that anyone can become successful in the arts, regardless of their natural ability. Consequently, some people argue that individuals with limited talent can become rich and famous, while genuinely talented artists receive less recognition. I largely agree with this view because popularity and commercial success are often influenced more by social media and marketing than by artistic ability.

One major reason why people with little talent can become famous is the influence of social media. Platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram allow almost anyone to share music, acting performances, artwork or other creative content with millions of people. Success on these platforms is often determined by the number of views, followers and shares rather than the quality of the work itself. For example, a person may become famous because of a short entertaining video or a distinctive personality, even if they do not possess exceptional artistic skills. Once they gain a large following, companies may offer them sponsorships and other commercial opportunities, allowing them to earn substantial amounts of money.

Another important factor is the entertainment industry's focus on profit. Producers, publishers and media companies often promote artists who are likely to attract large audiences rather than those who are necessarily the most talented. A highly skilled musician or writer may spend years developing their craft but remain relatively unknown because they lack money for advertising or do not have connections in the industry. In contrast, someone with strong marketing support can become successful much more quickly. This can make it difficult for genuinely talented people to receive the recognition they deserve.

However, I do not believe that talent has become completely unimportant. In many areas of the arts, people with exceptional skills eventually gain recognition because audiences continue to appreciate high-quality work. A talented musician, author or actor who consistently produces excellent work can build a loyal audience over time. In addition, awards, professional competitions and respected artistic institutions still provide opportunities for talented individuals to demonstrate their abilities.

In conclusion, I agree that modern society sometimes places greater value on popularity, marketing and entertainment than on genuine artistic talent. Although social media and commercial interests can allow less talented people to become rich and famous, true ability remains important for achieving lasting respect and success in the arts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments regarding the influence of social media and the profit-driven nature of the entertainment industry are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of TikTok and YouTube. You also provide a balanced view by acknowledging that talent still holds value in the long term, which adds depth to your argument. The ideas are logically extended, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes your main points. The response is well-structured and directly answers the question posed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, starting with a clear topic sentence. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Consequently,' 'For example,' 'In contrast,' and 'In addition,' which help to guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall flow of the essay. Referencing is clear throughout, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words. The structure is coherent and supports the development of your argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'natural ability,' 'commercial success,' 'exceptional artistic skills,' and 'loyal audience' show a good command of topic-specific language. You use less common items appropriately, and your word choice is generally accurate and natural. There are no significant errors in spelling or word formation that impede communication. While the vocabulary is effective and clear, incorporating a few more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions could elevate this to a higher band, but the current range is well-suited for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'A talented musician... who consistently produces excellent work can build...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no major grammatical errors that cause confusion. You demonstrate the ability to use a range of structures with flexibility, which is consistent with a high level of proficiency. The writing is clear, accurate, and flows naturally throughout the response.
