IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I totally agree with this that real talent is not valued. In the modern ages, the only thing that is being seen all over the world is the money and power. The person who is being valued is that person who has a big amount of wealth in his pocket. The people who know nothing that how education actually works does not know anything about qualifications or how the world can be progressed in a better way. The families which are rich from their ancestors, can buy anything they want to, and the people who want to start their life with a new beginning and does not have anything to lose and also, has a lot to win but they are left back and the only reason is that they are shortage of money. In this world, the real talent is left behind and the person, who can pay without any difficulty can achieve all the platforms and goals. The seat which was supposed to be given to the right and educated one, goes to the person who is not only the false one, but also, the one who cannot even speak properly. I feel that this world is a full of expected ones that if you can take advantage from the person standing right in front of you, you can help them and take help from them, just like the "take and return policy". The government have to understand that not everyone is brought up with a golden spoon in his or her mouth, everyone should get a chance to express themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but the development is limited. While you express a strong opinion, the arguments are repetitive and rely on generalizations about wealth and power rather than specific examples related to the arts (music, literature, acting). The prompt asks for a discussion on the arts, but your essay focuses almost exclusively on socio-economic inequality in general. To improve, you should provide concrete examples of how 'talentless' individuals gain fame in the arts, perhaps by discussing the influence of social media or marketing over genuine artistic skill. The ideas are present but lack the depth and specific evidence required for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure. It is written as a single block of text, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of your argument. Paragraphing is essential in IELTS writing to separate different ideas. While you use some cohesive devices like 'In this world' and 'In the modern ages', the flow is often mechanical. The logical progression is hindered by the lack of clear topic sentences and paragraph breaks. To improve, organize your essay into an introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on different aspects of the argument, and a conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'big amount of wealth', 'the false one', and 'take and return policy' are either imprecise or unnatural in an academic context. You rely on basic vocabulary to express complex social issues. To achieve a higher score, you need to use a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to the arts and societal structures. For example, instead of 'the person who is being valued', you could use 'individuals who are prioritized' or 'the commodification of talent'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('The government have to understand', 'The people... does not know'), awkward phrasing ('the only thing that is being seen all over the world is the money'), and incorrect article usage. You rely mostly on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and refining your use of relative clauses and complex sentence structures to ensure your meaning is conveyed accurately.
