IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In many countries, the arts have become increasingly accessible, allowing almost anyone to pursue careers in music, literature, acting and visual art. Some people argue that this has resulted in individuals with little genuine talent becoming wealthy and famous, while talented artists receive less recognition. I partly agree with this view, although I believe that popularity and artistic ability are not always mutually exclusive.

On the one hand, modern technology and social media have made it much easier for people without professional training to gain public attention. Platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram allow individuals to share their work directly with millions of viewers without needing approval from traditional publishers, record companies or galleries. Consequently, people may become famous because of their appearance, personality or controversial behaviour rather than their artistic ability. For example, an inexperienced singer can become widely known after a short video goes viral, even though technically stronger musicians may have spent years developing their skills without receiving similar attention. In this sense, commercial success does not necessarily indicate genuine talent.

On the other hand, I do not believe that the rise of amateur artists has caused genuine talent to lose its value completely. The internet can actually provide talented individuals with opportunities that were previously unavailable. A gifted musician, writer or artist can now build an international audience independently and attract employers, publishers or producers. Furthermore, the public does not judge artistic quality solely by technical skill. Creativity, originality and the ability to connect emotionally with an audience are also important forms of talent. Therefore, someone who becomes famous without conventional training should not automatically be considered untalented.

In conclusion, I agree that social media and modern entertainment can sometimes reward popularity rather than genuine artistic ability. However, I disagree that talented people are no longer valued. In fact, modern technology can give them greater opportunities to demonstrate their abilities and reach a much wider audience. Ultimately, long-term recognition is more likely to depend on creativity, quality and the ability to produce meaningful work than on temporary popularity.
