Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries, people usually believe that it is not difficult to take part and get popularity in the arts such as music, literature, acting, and art, based on the attitude that anyone can do it. As a result, they become rich and famous without genuine talent. I strongly disagree with this perspective because art requires skills and inner spirit, and getting popularity requires an expertise to attract others.

One main reason of why i believe that the attitude to do anything is not enough for getting success in the arts. Although courage and satisfaction are important factors to enter in a profession, it also requires hard work and inner spirit. A person who have no skills in the arts must have to practise consistently to attract audience. Appreciation from people is all about appeal and attraction and an appealing work is associated with genuine talent. Therefore, if a person work hard to improve his skills and to make his talent more effective, audience would start to appreciate his work.

Another reason of my disagreement is that financial earning requires expertise in an area of life. It is nearly impossible to say that a person with no talent become famous instead of one who has genuine talent. It does not matter a person belongs to the arts or not, the most important thing is that he has enough experience to attract others. This expertise as a result can lead to popularity and he would be able to earn money. For instance, if a person produces an appealing work of art, he will get money as a result which is all about talent.

In conclusion, it is not possible for a person to get popularity and wealth without any talent. The arts requires inner spirit and consistency to make an art work appealing. This as a result can make a person financially successful and famous.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position of disagreement. The ideas are relevant, though they are somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument that 'expertise' and 'hard work' are required for success is restated in both body paragraphs without significant extension or new evidence. While the position is consistent, the development of ideas lacks depth; the essay relies on general assertions rather than specific, concrete examples of artists or industry trends to support the claim. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed illustrations or nuanced arguments to fully explore the complexities of the 'anyone can do it' attitude.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'One main reason', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly, rather than relying on simple additive structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly with words like 'popularity', 'talent', and 'appealing'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'get popularity' (better: 'gain popularity' or 'achieve fame') and 'financial earning' (better: 'financial success' or 'monetary gain'). To improve, you should aim to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to the arts and professional success to demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('A person who have no skills', 'The arts requires') and article usage errors ('a person with no talent become famous'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i' in the second paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
