IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

I would like to talk about Germany, which is a country I really want to visit in the future.*

Germany is a beautiful and developed country in Europe. I know that it is famous for its good education system, modern technology, historical places, and beautiful cities. I have also heard that Germany has good opportunities for international students and professionals. Cities like Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt are quite well known.

I would like to go there *alone* because I want to experience a new country independently. I think travelling alone would help me become more confident and responsible. I would like to visit different cities, see historical buildings, try German food, and explore the culture.

The main reason I want to visit Germany is *for my studies and future career*. My field is medical laboratory technology, so I am interested in learning more about medical research and advanced laboratory methods. I would like to see how modern laboratories work and learn about new practical methodologies and technologies in my field.

I also think Germany can offer good *study and job opportunities*. If I get a chance, I would like to continue my education there and gain practical experience. At the same time, I would love to travel around the country and explore different places.

*Overall, Germany is not just a country I want to visit for tourism. I would like to visit it to study, improve my professional skills, explore my medical field, and experience a new culture. That is why Germany is one of my dream destinations.*

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on whether 'anyone can do it' in the arts and whether genuine talent is being undervalued. Instead, the student has written a personal essay about their desire to visit Germany for study and career purposes. Because the response fails to address the prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed against the task requirements. In an actual IELTS examination, this would result in a score of 1.0 for Task Achievement as it does not respond to the set question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is well-structured in terms of paragraphing, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The ideas within the paragraphs are logically sequenced, and the student uses basic cohesive devices such as 'The main reason', 'At the same time', and 'Overall' to link ideas. While the content is irrelevant to the prompt, the internal flow and paragraphing are coherent and easy to follow, demonstrating a level of control that would be appropriate for a higher band if the topic were relevant.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, though it is somewhat repetitive and basic. The student uses words like 'developed', 'opportunities', 'independent', and 'methodologies'. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to their field of study, such as 'medical laboratory technology' and 'advanced laboratory methods'. However, there is a lack of sophisticated or less common lexical items that would be expected for a higher band score. The range is sufficient to express the student's personal intentions clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, the use of conditional sentences ('If I get a chance, I would like to...') and relative clauses ('...which is a country I really want to visit...') shows a reasonable range. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentences are mostly error-free, though the complexity is somewhat limited.
