IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, it is widely believed around the world that 'anyone can do it' in the field of arts-music, literature, acting, art, etc. Consequently, real talents are valued less and people with no talent are being affluent and prominent. I did not agree with this opinion and I will discuss briefly in this essay.

First and foremost, the perspective of anyone can do anything has some benefits. Turning to details, this perception is providing a better economic growth to the country and establishing a socio-economic balance among the people. Social media application like Instagram and Tiktok are providing platforms to such people, where they can connect with the world and attract viewers, eventually they get brand promotion with lots of money. It is somehow securing their future and establishing a support system for their families. For instance, a poor kid living in a countryside had no access to get the education in childhood, but now parents get him a smartphone and he started making content, generating a huge revenue.

On the other hand, it has severe bad impact in our modern day society. People who are impeccable in their respective field are getting no recognition. As a result, the brand value of versatile actors, signer, and comedians are declining significantly. For example, a drama artist who used to play in theater, are getting less audience because of online platforms have introduced and people are preferring online shows rather than offline.

In conclusion, although the mindset of 'anyone can do' is benefitting some proportion of citizens around the world, people are exposed to watch anything without filter. Therefore, government should introduce a censor board to check the content available online.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed the prompt, but your position is inconsistent. In the introduction, you state you 'did not agree' with the opinion, yet your second paragraph argues in favor of the 'anyone can do it' mindset by highlighting economic benefits. This creates a contradiction that weakens your overall argument. While you provide some relevant ideas, such as the impact of social media, the development is somewhat superficial. To improve, ensure your position is clearly maintained throughout the essay and that your supporting arguments directly reinforce your stated stance rather than undermining it.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'First and foremost', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal transitions. However, the logical progression within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'Turning to details', which feels unnatural. Additionally, the link between your arguments and the main topic is occasionally tenuous. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each sentence flows logically from the previous one to create a more cohesive argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'socio-economic balance', 'versatile', and 'prominent'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'providing a better economic growth' (should be 'fostering' or 'contributing to') and 'people are exposed to watch' (should be 'exposed to watching'). Some phrasing is also slightly repetitive or simplistic. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word choices are contextually accurate to convey your ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'people with no talent are being affluent' is an incorrect use of the continuous tense; 'a poor kid... had no access to get the education' should be 'access to education'; and 'a drama artist... are getting' shows a subject-verb agreement error. Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are clunky. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and verb tenses to ensure your writing is more accurate and professional.
