IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.
Do you agree or disagree?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
There is a growing belief in some societies that anyone can succeed in arts, regardless of their ability. While I agree that modern platforms have made arts more accessible, I do not believe this means that genuine talent is no longer valued.
It is true that social media and the internet have lowered barriers to entry in creative fields. In the past, becoming a musician or writer required record labels or publishers. Today, anyone can upload a song to YouTube or publish a book online. As the result, some individuals with limited skills gain temporary fame and even wealth through viral trends or good marketing. This can create the impression that talent is no longer important.
However, I would argue that long-term success in arts still depends on genuine ability and hard work. While it may be easy to become famous for some time, but audiences ultimately seek quality. For example, major film studios, orchestras and publishing houses still select artists based on skill on skill and training. Renowned authors like J.K. Rowling or musicians like Adele or actors like Emilia Clark become successful not just because of exposure, but because of their exceptional talent. Furthermore, public quickly loses interest in content that lack substance, Whereas truly talented artists build lasting careers.
In conclusion, although the ''anyone can do it'' has made arts more democratic, I disagree that it has devalued real talent. Genuine ability is still recognized and rewarded and it remained the key factor for sustained success in the creative industry.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt, clearly stating your position and supporting it with relevant examples. The argument is well-developed, moving from the acknowledgement of modern accessibility to the counter-argument regarding long-term success. You successfully balanced the two sides of the issue. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are fully integrated; for instance, while mentioning J.K. Rowling and Adele is effective, briefly explaining how their specific 'substance' contrasts with viral fame would add more depth to your analysis. Overall, the response is focused and maintains a clear position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the concession, the main argument, and the conclusion. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'While', 'However', 'For example', and 'Furthermore' to link your points. There is a minor issue with the phrase 'As the result' (should be 'As a result') and a slight repetition in 'on skill on skill', but these do not impede the flow of the argument. The transition between paragraphs is smooth, and the logical structure is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'lowered barriers to entry', 'viral trends', and 'sustained success' are well-chosen and appropriate for an academic context. There are a few minor errors, such as 'public quickly loses interest' (missing an article: 'the public') and 'content that lack substance' (subject-verb agreement: 'lacks'). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey your ideas clearly and effectively. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and article usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy communication. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as the redundant 'on skill on skill' and the missing article in 'the anyone can do it' (which should be 'the "anyone can do it" attitude'). Additionally, the sentence 'While it may be easy to become famous for some time, but audiences...' contains a redundant conjunction ('While' and 'but'). Despite these, the majority of your sentences are accurate, and your control of complex structures is generally good.
