IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The culmination of new ideas in a country is very heavily dependent on the quality of its arts. But in some countries today, there is a notion that skill and talent are not important factors for producing good art. This results in real talent being neglected and people with no talent getting all the fame. I only partially agree with this statement and discuss it in the upcoming paragraphs.

On one hand, the notion of ‘anyone can do it’ does result in ignorance of real talent. It does this by perpetuating the idea that doing arts like music, acting, and literature do not require any experience or practice. Consequently, believing this attitude increases the number of people doing arts and this over-saturates the arts field. This increases the chances of ordinary people achieving success in the field while genuine talent gets overshadowed.

On the other hand, the success of genuinely great art is not dependent on anything. This is because good art can be easily recognized and thus appreciated. Art produced by ordinary people is not received well by the masses and therefore is often times rejected by them. Real talent will get recognized, no matter what. Therefore it would not be wrong to say that the attitude that ‘anyone can do it’ has not effect on recognition of genuine talent.

In conclusion, there are facts which support both sides of the argument. The quantity of art produced by ordinary people is more but the quality of art produced by talented people still outshines them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by acknowledging the 'anyone can do it' attitude and providing a balanced view. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention that the field becomes 'over-saturated,' you do not provide concrete examples or evidence to support this claim, which is a requirement for a higher band. The argument in the second body paragraph—that good art is 'easily recognized'—is a strong point but remains under-developed. To improve, ensure that each main idea is supported by a specific example or a more detailed explanation of the mechanism behind the phenomenon.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the idea of 'over-saturation' and the claim that 'good art is not dependent on anything' is abrupt. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of cohesive devices and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid and less reliant on simple transition words.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'over-saturates,' 'genuine talent,' and 'culmination.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of basic words like 'art,' 'talent,' and 'people.' There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'has not effect' (should be 'has no effect'). To improve, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and synonyms to avoid repetitive phrasing and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. However, there are occasional errors, such as 'doing arts like music... do not require' (subject-verb agreement) and 'often times' (should be 'oftentimes' or 'often'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands. Focus on refining your control over complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement throughout your writing.
