Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this essay I will be discussing that some people in few countries believe that anyone can do anything when it comes to fields relevant to arts. Due to this fact some people with no talent might become rich while the ones with true talent might not get any appreciation. At the end of the essay I will also giving relevant examples.

The attitude that anyone can do music, literature or any art is as just wrong as a talented person not getting appreciation. I believe people with good skills in arts are not just talented but also God gifted. Its impossible for anyone to get better in this beautiful area of expertise. On the other hand if we do not promote those kids or adults with good skills in arts it would be a big disgrace to our society as untalented people will get famous and rich.

Their are many hidden gems in our communities who are waiting for our appreciation and approval, we should support them. If people with lesser talent start getting famous and rich it would be a big dishonesty with those with more talent, and will also leave a very negative trend for our future generations. It would be also waste of time and resources if we put our energy in those who really don't matter.

For example, I had been always surrounded by those individuals who were good in music or painting, they had been good since they were kids. But on the other hand, I was never able to sing or paint even if how much I tried to do. In this case if I keep on trying rather then supporting the ones with real talent would be just a waste of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you argue that talent is 'God gifted' and should be supported, the arguments lack depth and specific real-world examples. The example provided in the final paragraph is personal and anecdotal rather than illustrative of the broader societal issue mentioned in the prompt. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the consequences of this 'anyone can do it' attitude with more analytical depth, perhaps discussing the impact on cultural standards or the commercialization of art, rather than focusing solely on personal inability to paint or sing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'On the other hand' are used twice in close proximity, which affects the flow. Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt, such as the jump from discussing 'hidden gems' to the 'dishonesty' of rewarding untalented individuals. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph flows naturally into the next would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You rely on basic descriptors like 'big disgrace' and 'very negative trend'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'big dishonesty' (which should be 'a great injustice') and 'God gifted' (which is usually 'gifted by nature' or 'innate talent'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to the arts and societal values, and focus on using words in their correct collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Examples include 'Their are many hidden gems' (should be 'There are'), 'I will also giving' (should be 'I will also be giving'), and 'rather then' (should be 'rather than'). The sentence structures are relatively simple, and there is a lack of complex, error-free sentences. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct verb tense usage, and proofreading for common homophone errors like 'their/there'. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures will also help demonstrate better grammatical control.
