In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, in many countries, people think that anyone can become successful in the art industry like music, literature, acting, and painting. Because of this, some people who do not have real talent are getting money and fame, while genuine artists are ignored. I completely agree with this statement.

First of all, social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have made it very easy for anyone to become famous. Today, people just post short videos, basic dances, or simple songs without having any special artistic talent. If their content goes viral, they get millions of followers in a very short time. Because of this popularity, big brands give them expensive advertisement deals and movies. For example, many famous internet celebrities nowadays cannot sing or act properly, but they are earning a lot of money just because of internet trends.

On the other hand, real artists who practice music or painting for many years are not getting enough respect or payment. These talented people spend a lot of time improving their skills, but because they do not make funny or viral videos, the media does not give them attention. For instance, many classical singers and painters spend their whole life practicing art, but they struggle to earn money because the public only wants quick entertainment.

In conclusion, I agree that today anyone can enter the art world easily even without real talent. Modern internet culture is making talentless people rich and famous very quickly, while hardworking and genuine artists are not being valued properly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response clearly addresses the prompt by taking a firm stance and providing relevant arguments. You successfully identify the role of social media in the 'anyone can do it' phenomenon and contrast this with the struggles of traditional artists. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the 'why' behind this shift—perhaps discussing the changing nature of consumer demand or the democratisation of art platforms—to provide a more nuanced analysis. Overall, the position is consistent and the main points are well-supported with clear examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is well-organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' effectively to guide the reader. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing between sentences is more sophisticated. Currently, the structure is functional and clear, which meets the requirements for a solid band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'art industry', 'genuine artists', and 'internet trends' are used appropriately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the essay to a higher band. For example, instead of repeating 'famous' or 'money', you could use more precise synonyms like 'renowned', 'lucrative', or 'financial remuneration'. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the word choice is generally natural, though it remains within a fairly standard register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over basic grammar, and your sentences are generally error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There is a good use of conditional structures ('If their content goes viral...') and relative clauses. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate a greater variety of complex grammatical forms, such as passive voice or more sophisticated subordinating conjunctions, and ensure that your punctuation is consistently precise. The current level of accuracy is high, but the range of structures remains somewhat limited.
