IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I do not agree with the statement as in every field, it requires significant time and patience to become popular or expert. No matter in which field you are, you have to to show up everyday. Meanwhile there is a factor of luck as well but it can add on to your hard work but we will hardly see any people which become rich or famous entirely through luck.

Every person has some fair advantages which should not be taken as for granted. Like if someone is good in music from the very early age or his parents are from the same industry, he or she can get some advantage but he has to work really hard in order to become famous in his field.

Some people argue that like in some industries like movies nepotism is very evident. We all have seen that sometimes, some people come on the main screen or in the highlights due to some advantage but they suddenly disappeared from the main screen because they have taken that fair advantage as for granted. One should understand that if you have to be in the main stream or famous in your field, one should not only rely on talented but also do hard work in order to survive in their specific industry and eventually become rice and famous for longer period of time.

Lastly, every field is unique and needs substantial amount of time to become famous, no matter how talented one individual is in his field.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against the idea that 'anyone can do it' in the arts. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention nepotism and the need for hard work, the arguments remain quite general and lack specific, concrete examples to illustrate your points. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your reasoning with more detailed explanations or real-world illustrations. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesize the points made in the body paragraphs. The response is just at the minimum length, which restricts the depth of your analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Like if someone...', 'Some people argue that...'). There are instances where the transition between sentences feels abrupt, and the logical flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive to ensure that each point leads logically to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. However, there is a lack of variety and precision. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'get some advantage' and 'become rich and famous', which is repeated. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'rely on talented' (should be 'rely on talent') and 'become rice and famous' (a spelling error for 'rich'). To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to the arts and professional success.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect the flow. For example, 'there is a factor of luck as well but it can add on to your hard work' is a run-on sentence, and 'we will hardly see any people which become' should use 'who become'. There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement throughout the text. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation would be beneficial.
