Student answer (Band 5.0)
In recent years, there has been growing debate about whether cinemas and theatres are important or not for entertainment. Some individuals argue that in the digital era, theatres and cinemas are not essential for entertainment because people can watch all they want online. Others argue that these entertainments are important both economic and cultural reasons. Although individuals can watch all the entertainment online, I believe that cinemas and theaters are still important for economy and cultural reasons.
On the one hand, some citizens argue that in digital age, theaters and cinemas are not important because individuals can watch all the entertainment online. Online entertainment provides convenience and access to a wide range of movies. After a hectic day at work, people can conveniently watch a wide range of movies online without having to pay for cinema tickets. Online platforms also provide a wide range of films and programs.
On the other hand, some individuals believe that theaters and cinemas are still important because it provides economic and cultural advantages. Theaters and cinemas are not simply a form of entertainment. This is because they promote cultural values and traditions. Another main point is that theaters also provide economic benefits because they create employment and generate income. For instance, a successful cinema can provide employment for ticket sellers and food-service workers while also generating income for nearby restaurants and shops.
In conclusion, some individuals argue that cinemas and theaters are no longer important due to online entertainment, while others argue that these sources are essential for both economic and cultural reasons. Online entertainment provides convenience and variety, whereas cinemas provide employment and generate income.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.0
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on whether 'anyone can do it' in the arts and the resulting impact on genuine talent. However, the essay discusses the importance of cinemas and theatres in the digital age. Because the student failed to address the prompt entirely, the task achievement score is severely impacted. Even though the essay is structured as an argument, it does not engage with the specific question provided, making it impossible to award a passing score for task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' is appropriate and helps the reader follow the argument. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two sides of the discussion. While the content is irrelevant to the prompt, the structural integrity of the writing is sound, demonstrating a clear ability to organise ideas in a standard academic format.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, though it is somewhat repetitive. Phrases like 'watch all the entertainment online' and 'wide range of movies' are used multiple times. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to the arts and economics, such as 'cultural values', 'employment', and 'generate income'. However, the range is limited and lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. The word choices are generally accurate, but there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'important both economic and cultural reasons' (missing 'for') and 'in digital age' (missing 'the'). However, these errors do not impede communication. The control of punctuation is generally good, and the sentence construction is clear. The student is able to produce error-free sentences, but the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, and the errors that do occur are noticeable.
