IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Recently, we have witnessed a drastic upward trend in the field of arts, including music, literature, acting and many more. It has somehow developed an opinion that anyone can do it, including people who have no talent, and people with genuine talent are not appreciated. I partially agree with this claim.

One reason for this view is the rapid growth of social media. Today, people can easily become famous by posting songs, short videos or other forms of entertainment, even if they do not possess exceptional artistic skills. In many cases, popularity depends more on appearance, entertainment value and the ability to attract attention than on actual talent. Consequently, some less-talented individuals can earn substantial amounts of money and gain recognition but the fame they have got will not remain constant and a time will come people will forget them.

However, I believe that genuine talent is still highly valued, particularly in professional fields. Becoming a successful musician, actor or writer generally requires creativity, dedication and years of practice. Although social media can provide temporary fame, talented artists are more likely to achieve long-term success because their skills allow them to consistently produce high-quality work. For instance, professionally trained musicians and actors continue to receive awards and recognition based on their abilities and government are also spending a lot to motivate the talented professionals by distributing cash prize and many more.

In conclusion, I partly agree that modern platforms have enabled people with limited talent to become famous and wealthy. Nevertheless, genuine talent remains important and is still appreciated when individuals demonstrate consistent ability and dedication.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position ('I partially agree with this claim') and exploring both sides of the argument. In the second paragraph, the student discusses how social media enables individuals with limited talent to gain fame and wealth quickly. In the third paragraph, the counterargument is developed, noting that genuine talent remains essential for long-term success, supported by examples such as professionally trained artists receiving awards and government backing. The ideas are well extended and supported, meeting the criteria for Band 7, as the response presents a clear overall position and develops relevant supporting arguments effectively throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction that states the partial agreement, followed by a body paragraph on social media fame, a counter-paragraph on genuine talent, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately and appropriately, such as 'One reason for this view', 'Consequently', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different aspects of the argument, ensuring that the progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. This aligns well with the requirements for a Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for some flexibility and precision, such as 'drastic upward trend', 'exceptional artistic skills', 'substantial amounts of money', and 'long-term success'. There are occasional lapses in collocation and style, such as 'the fame they have got will not remain constant' and 'government are also spending a lot' (which also has a minor plural agreement issue). However, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and enables the message to be communicated clearly. The use of less common items like 'consequently' and 'dedication' demonstrates a lexical level consistent with a Band 6.5 or 7.0, comfortably securing a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('people who have no talent') and conditional or concessive structures ('Although social media can provide temporary fame...'). There are some minor grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as 'a time will come people will forget them' (missing relative pronoun or preposition) and 'government are also spending' (subject-verb agreement mismatch with 'government' as a singular collective noun). Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the sentence structures are sufficiently varied to meet the Band 6 descriptors.
