IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, there is a growing belief in some countries that anyone can succeed in the arts, including music, literature, acting and painting. Consequently, people with limited talent can sometimes become rich and famous, while genuinely talented artists receive less attention. I largely agree with this view because social media and commercial interests often reward popularity rather than real ability.

One major reason is the influence of social media. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube allow ordinary people to become famous within a very short time. In many cases, popularity depends more on appearance, entertainment or controversial content than on artistic talent. For example, someone may become famous after one amusing video and then earn money through advertisements and sponsorships. This can create the impression that professional training and natural ability are no longer necessary for success.

Another important factor is the commercial nature of the entertainment industry. Companies often choose performers who already have large audiences because they can attract more customers and generate higher profits. As a result, talented musicians, writers and actors may struggle to gain recognition if they do not have strong publicity or a large online following. This can be discouraging for people who have spent years developing their artistic skills.

However, genuine talent is not completely ignored. Artists who consistently produce high-quality and meaningful work can still build successful careers. In the long term, audiences often appreciate creativity, originality and professional skill.

In conclusion, I agree that modern society sometimes gives fame and wealth to people without exceptional talent. Nevertheless, genuine artistic ability remains valuable, particularly when it is supported by dedication, creativity and continuous improvement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both sides of the issue—acknowledging that modern platforms reward popularity over genuine talent while also balancing this with the persistence of true artistic value. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay, starting with the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the influence of social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and the commercial pressures of the entertainment industry. The arguments flow logically and directly answer the prompt's question of whether to agree or disagree. This meets the criteria for a solid Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from an introduction of the thesis, through two well-supported body paragraphs addressing social media and commercialism, to a nuanced counter-argument and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and flexibly without being overly mechanical, as seen with phrases like 'Consequently', 'One major reason', and 'Another important factor'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. Referencing throughout the text is clear and easy to follow. This performance aligns comfortably with the descriptors for Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision. Less common lexical items are employed with a good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'commercial nature', 'publicity', 'artistic skills', and 'continuous improvement'. Word choices are generally appropriate and contribute to an academic tone. While there are a few minor lexical choices, such as 'amusing video' rather than something more idiomatic, spelling and word choice errors are virtually non-existent and do not impede communication. The vocabulary is well-suited to an upper-intermediate level, meriting a Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer displays a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, maintaining good control over grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex structures include conditional and participial clauses, such as 'Platforms such as TikTok... allow ordinary people to become famous...' and '...if they do not have strong publicity or a large online following.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and the few minor errors that might occur do not impede communication at all. Punctuation is accurate throughout the text. This control and variety clearly reflect the criteria for a Band 7.0 score.
