Student answer (Band 5.5)

Today, people in some countries give an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the field of arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. This as resulted in diminshing real talent while those with no talent are getting rich and famous. Unappreciated raw talent can be from the society not seeing the values of people being skilled in art.

Firstly, a lot of people in the art industry have been feeling unappreciated over the years, they sacrifices all their energy into their work day and night but people rarely recognise them. This has been going on for years, lack of financial resources to drive their talent both locally and internationally are one of the negative effects these talented artists are experiencing. Secondly, government support towards arts plays a significant role on how people perceive the values of art, because their are a lot of revenues to be geneated in to the economy through art, both in music, literature, acting etc. Also, if schools can add art into there curriculum this will help young learners explore their full potentials. For example, Nigerian educational system barely recognise art, children are not encourage to explore art works, parent discourage their children from any art work related skills, they prefer them focusing on science and math. This behaviours from government, schools, parents can give artist low self esteem and make them feel unappreciated.

People with no talent becoming success in art can be through exploitation of talented artist work, having low self esteem will not give the talented artist courage to stand on their moral grounds. Also, untalented artist understands the society better, they are mostly business men and women that have the financial funds to market artworks.

In conclusion, art is part of our lives, a lot of societies generates revenues through art. Government should support artworks, schools should add and encourage arts in their school activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing whether genuine talent is undervalued while untalented people become rich and famous. A clear position is established and maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and occasionally lacks depth or clear argumentation. For instance, the transition into how untalented artists exploit the work of genuine artists is abrupt and underdeveloped. While supporting examples are provided regarding the Nigerian educational system, the argument tends to overgeneralise certain points. The response meets the core requirements of the prompt and presents relevant ideas, placing it firmly at a Band 6.0 level for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, sentences such as 'This as resulted in diminshing real talent' and 'Firstly, a lot of people...' show weaknesses in linking ideas smoothly. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow of paragraphs lacks seamless transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun use ('This behaviours...'). Overall, the progression of ideas is discernible, fitting the Band 6 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to the arts and society, such as 'financial resources', 'curriculum', and 'exploitation'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'diminshing' instead of diminishing, 'sacrifices' instead of sacrificed, 'geneated' instead of generated, 'there' instead of their, 'encourage' instead of encouraged, and 'behavours' instead of behaviours. Furthermore, the expression 'give an attitude that' is unnatural. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('if schools can add art into there curriculum this will help...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. Examples include 'people in some countries give an attitude', 'lack of financial resources... are one of the', 'because their are a lot of revenues', and 'becoming success' instead of becoming successful. These errors occur frequently and can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, aligning the response with Band 5.0.
