IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

well i don't agree nor disgree. First we should consider that people who become rich and famous without a talent is already a pure talent because if you think of it even without a talent they worked very hard on what they want, they really believed in themselves and took ' anyone can do it ' seriously , for exemple i dont have any talent but i'm working hard to be rich .

But on the other hand genuine talent is a thing that people don't appreciate or value . Some of them think it's an easy way for spotlight so they don't like it , some invy the talented people while the others enjoy talent and think that it's emusing .

Maybe the genuine talent is not valued or appreciated because the people with talent didn't know how to use it in the right field , which led to a lost talent , while their is talented people didn't even get the chance to shine and show their talent or even because they didn't work hard on it , because nowadays anyone can do it why only the talented people are not appreciated ?.

From my prespective i see that today the fact that anyone can do it is really relatable , if a person is talented eventually he'll be apreciated if he works hard on showing people what he has . people with talent should appreciate their talent first in order to be appreciated .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether genuine talent is undervalued and whether people without talent can succeed, initially taking a neutral stance ("well i don't agree nor disgree") before leaning towards a more nuanced view. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on personal assertions such as "i dont have any talent but i'm working hard to be rich." Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains 247 words, falling 3 words short of the 250-word minimum. This negative constraint violation requires a slight downward adjustment to the task achievement score, placing it firmly in the Band 5 category.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, showing some attempt at structural organization. However, the logical progression is frequently hindered by weak or missing cohesive devices and poor referencing (e.g., jumping between the lack of appreciation for talent and the effort of untalented individuals without clear transitions). Paragraphing is also misused, as the text blends multiple disparate thoughts into single long paragraphs rather than grouping ideas logically. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or inaccurate, leading to an overall choppy reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, featuring phrases like "rich and famous," "hard work," and "genuine talent." There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as "invy" (envy), "emusing" (amusing), and "lost talent" instead of wasted potential. While the language is minimally adequate to convey the basic meaning, the limited range and frequent errors in word formation and spelling prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts some complex sentence structures, but these are frequently faulty or punctuated incorrectly. There are run-on sentences and punctuation errors, such as missing capital letters and improper comma splices (e.g., "First we should consider that people who become rich and famous without a talent is already a pure talent because..."). Subject-verb agreement errors are also present, such as "people... is already a pure talent" and "their is talented people." These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader.
