IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.
Do you agree or disagree?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays modern generation is highly influenced by different forms of art such as music, literature, acting and painting. It is widely suggested that anyone can become famous and wealthy around the world even with minor artistic skills. Therefore, individuals with real talent fail to get enough recognition. However, I partly agree with this viewpoint because of several compelling reasons.
A key justification for this stance is that the living standards of people have transformed since the introduction of social media. Anyone can become a public figure simply by uploading content on various online platforms including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. A key example for this is that within a decade, many young adults and teenagers have gone viral on social media by making lip-syncing videos on different songs. In a short time, they have become popular. Furthermore, they did not get any professional training or formal education for making these short videos. In addition to this, a significant portion of the public is generating a substantial amount of money through YouTube channels.
Contrary to this, many people contend that skillful people are not getting enough attention. That is not completely true because there are different fields that still appreciate the genuine talent. Although, going viral on social media by a single video is effortless, to sustain oneself in the market for a long term requires dedication and perseverance. For instance, the audience on social media can promote a trending song for a shorter duration but traditional companies prefer a person who can work in all circumstances regardless of the platform he is working on. Film directors do not hire actors who can act well on short videos, instead they choose the person with intrinsic acting abilities.
In conclusion, it is very simple for someone to get overnight fame on various entertaining platforms, even so ultimate success needs a person to be an expert. Earning money without any skillset is not a game-changing procedure, surviving for a long run is the ultimate goal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a partial agreement with the prompt's premise. The response presents well-developed ideas, acknowledging both sides of the argument: the rise of overnight digital fame through platforms like TikTok and YouTube, and the counter-argument that true, sustainable artistic success still requires genuine talent and professional persistence. The position is maintained clearly throughout the essay, and the arguments are supported with relevant examples, such as social media viral videos and traditional film directors looking for intrinsic acting abilities. The ideas are extended appropriately, meeting the expectations for a Band 7 level where all parts are addressed with a clear position and well-supported arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from an introduction of the standpoint to social media influencers, then to the counter-argument regarding genuine talent, and finally a succinct conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'A key justification for this stance', 'Contrary to this', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes slightly mechanical, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately to structure the flow of arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'compelling reasons', 'living standards', 'perseverance', and 'intrinsic acting abilities'. There are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'entertaining platforms' instead of 'entertainment platforms' or 'entertainment apps', and 'generating a substantial amount of money' which is slightly awkward in context. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is varied enough to allow precision and meaning is never obscured by lexical errors, fitting the criteria for a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses like 'Although, going viral on social media by a single video is effortless, to sustain oneself in the market for a long term requires dedication and perseverance.' There are some minor punctuation and grammatical errors, such as the unnecessary comma after 'Although' and slight preposition issues like 'working on' instead of 'working in'. Despite these recurring minor issues, the majority of sentences are grammatically sound and communication is never impeded. The control of grammar aligns well with Band 7 descriptors.
