IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, the modern generation is highly influenced by different forms of art such as music, literature, acting and painting. It is widely suggested that anyone can become famous and wealthy globally even with minor artistic skills. Therefore, individuals with real talent fail to get enough recognition. However, I partly agree with this viewpoint because of several compelling reasons.

A key justification for this stance is that the living standards of people have transformed since the introduction of social media. Anyone can become a public figure simply by uploading content on various online platforms including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. A key example of this is that within a decade, many young adults and teenagers have gone viral on social media by making lip-syncing videos on to songs. In a short time, they have become popular. Furthermore, they did not get any professional training or formal education for making these short videos. In addition to this, a significant portion of the public is generating a substantial amount of money through YouTube channels.

Contrary to this, many people contend that talented people are not getting enough attention. That is not completely true because there are different fields that still appreciate genuine talent. Although going viral on social media by a single video is effortless, to sustain oneself in the market for the long term requires dedication and perseverance. For instance, the audience on social media can promote a trending song for a shorter duration but traditional companies prefer a person who can work in all circumstances regardless of the platform he is working on. Film directors do not hire actors who can act well on short videos, instead they choose the person with intrinsic acting abilities.

In conclusion, it is very simple for someone to get overnight fame on various entertaining platforms, even so ultimate success needs a person to be an expert. Earning money without any skillset is not a game-changing procedure, surviving for a long run is the ultimate goal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task and establishes a clear, partially agreeing position early on. The prompt discusses the societal attitude that anyone can succeed in the arts without genuine talent, leading to undeserved fame and wealth. The student responds to this by arguing that while social media allows untrained individuals to achieve overnight fame, long-term success and genuine appreciation still require professional skills and dedication. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as influencers gaining quick popularity on TikTok and Instagram versus traditional film directors seeking actors with intrinsic talent. However, the development in the second body paragraph could be slightly more expansive to reach Band 8. Overall, the response meets the criteria for a Band 7 by maintaining a clear position and extending relevant ideas throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from an introduction to an acknowledgement of social media trends, a counter-argument regarding genuine talent, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'A key justification for this stance', 'Furthermore', 'Contrary to this', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are minor cohesion flaws, such as 'videos on to songs' and slightly mechanical transitions between ideas. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the argument. The progression of thought is easy to follow, making this a solid performance that fits comfortably within the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, suitable for a Band 7 score. Less common lexical items are attempted, including 'living standards', 'public figure', 'intrinsic acting abilities', 'overnight fame', and 'dedication and perseverance'. There is also good collocation control in phrases like 'sustained oneself in the market' and 'formal education'. Although occasional inaccuracies occur, such as 'entertaining platforms' instead of 'entertainment platforms' or 'videos on to songs', these do not impede communication. The vocabulary allows the writer to convey precise meanings and arguments effectively across the essay, reflecting a solid upper-intermediate standard.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer displays a good variety of complex structures alongside simple forms. Examples of complex sentences include 'Although going viral on social media by a single video is effortless, to sustain oneself in the market for the long term requires dedication and perseverance.' Control over grammar and punctuation is generally good, with frequent error-free sentences. There are minor slips, such as 'videos on to songs' (unnecessary preposition) and 'by a single video' (instead of 'with a single video'), but these errors do not impede communication or obscure the writer's meaning. The grammatical range comfortably supports the complexity of the arguments presented, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
