IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, the modern generation is highly influenced by different forms of art such as music, literature, acting and painting. It is widely suggested that anyone can become famous and wealthy globally even with minor artistic skills. Therefore, individuals with real talent fail to get enough recognition. However, I partly agree with this viewpoint because of several compelling reasons.

A key justification for this stance is that the living standards of people have transformed since the introduction of social media. Anyone can become a public figure simply by uploading content on various online platforms including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. A key example of this is that within a decade, many young adults and teenagers have gone viral on social media by making lip-syncing videos on songs. In a short time, they have become popular. Furthermore, they did not get any professional training or formal education for making these short videos. In addition to this, a significant portion of the public is generating a substantial amount of money through YouTube channels.

Contrary to this, many people contend that talented people are not getting enough attention. That is not completely true because there are different fields that still appreciate genuine talent. Although going viral on social media with a single video is effortless, to sustain oneself in the market for the long term requires dedication and perseverance. For instance, the audience on social media can promote a trending song for a shorter duration but traditional companies prefer a person who can work in all circumstances regardless of the platform he is working on. Film directors do not hire actors who can act well on short videos, instead they choose the person with intrinsic acting abilities.

In conclusion, it is very simple for someone to get overnight fame on various entertainment platforms, even so ultimate success needs a person to be an expert. Earning money without any skillset is not a game-changing procedure, surviving for a long run is the ultimate goal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that they partly agree with the viewpoint. Ideas are extended and supported appropriately, such as mentioning how social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok enable individuals to gain rapid popularity without formal training. The body paragraphs effectively explore both sides of the argument: the ease of achieving overnight fame versus the long-term requirement of genuine talent and dedication to sustain a career in the entertainment market. The position remains consistent throughout the response, and the arguments are sufficiently developed to meet the Band 7 requirements, although a slightly deeper exploration of literature or fine art alongside music and acting could have elevated the development further.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction that clearly states the writer's position, followed by body paragraphs that examine the different facets of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, with transitional phrases like 'A key justification for this stance', 'Contrary to this', and 'In conclusion' guiding the reader smoothly through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. While referencing is generally clear, a minor over-reliance on formulaic transitions keeps this criterion firmly at Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully employing less common items such as 'public figure', 'professional training', 'intrinsic acting abilities', and 'overnight fame'. There is good awareness of collocation and style, although some phrases feel slightly repetitive or generic, such as 'making these short videos' and 'generating a substantial amount of money'. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate, and vocabulary does not impede communication. The lexical range is adequate for a solid Band 7 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a good variety of complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional or concessive clauses effectively, such as 'Although going viral on social media with a single video is effortless, to sustain oneself in the market for the long term requires dedication and perseverance.' There is a high frequency of error-free sentences, and punctuation is handled well throughout the essay. Grammatical control is strong, with only minor awkwardness in phrasing rather than systemic errors. This reflects the characteristics of Band 7 performance.
