IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.
Do you agree or disagree?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, the modern generation is highly influenced by different forms of art such as music, literature, acting and painting. It is widely suggested that anyone can become famous and wealthy globally even with minor artistic skills. Therefore, individuals with real talent fail to get enough recognition. However, I partly agree with this viewpoint because of several compelling reasons.
A key justification for this stance is that the living standards of people have transformed since the introduction of social media. Anyone can become a public figure simply by uploading content on various online platforms including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. A key example of this is that within a decade, many young adults and teenagers have gone viral on social media by making lip-syncing videos of songs. In a short time, they have become popular. Furthermore, they did not get any professional training or formal education for making these short videos. In addition to this, a significant portion of the public is earning a substantial amount of money through YouTube channels.
Contrary to this, many people contend that talented people are not getting enough attention. That is not completely true because there are different fields that still appreciate genuine talent. Although going viral on social media with a single video is effortless, sustaining oneself in the market for the long term requires dedication and perseverance. For instance, the audience on social media can promote a trending song for a shorter duration but traditional companies prefer a person who can work in all circumstances regardless of the platform they are working on. Film directors do not hire actors who can act well in short videos, instead, they choose the person with intrinsic acting abilities.
In conclusion, it is very simple for someone to get overnight fame on various entertainment platforms, yet ultimate success needs a person to be an expert. Earning money without any skillset is not a game-changing procedure, surviving for a long run is the ultimate goal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position ('I partly agree with this viewpoint') and supporting it with relevant arguments and examples. The response examines both sides of the argument: why social media has enabled untrained individuals to achieve fame and wealth, and why genuine talent remains valued by traditional industries. The ideas are extended and supported effectively, as seen in the discussion about social media platforms like TikTok alongside traditional film directors selecting actors based on intrinsic ability. This demonstrates a well-developed response that aligns comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to arguments supporting the rise of untrained artists, then to the counter-argument regarding genuine talent, and finally concluding. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Contrary to this,' 'For instance,' and 'In conclusion,' though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct phases of the argument. Overall, the flow is coherent and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7 rating.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited for an Academic Task 2 essay. Phrases such as 'living standards,' 'public figure,' 'professional training,' and 'intrinsic acting abilities' show a sufficient range for flexibility and precision. There are attempts at less common lexical items ('compulsive reasons' instead of compelling, though minor collocation slips occur). Spelling is generally accurate, and word choices do not impede communication. The vocabulary meets the criteria for Band 6.5, rounding to a Band 7 given the precise phrasing in several sections.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with generally good control. Complex structures are employed effectively, such as 'Although going viral on social media with a single video is effortless, sustaining oneself in the market for the long term requires dedication and perseverance.' Punctuation and grammar are controlled well throughout the text, with only minor non-systematic errors that never impede communication. The majority of sentences are grammatically sound, placing the response securely in the Band 7 territory for grammatical range and accuracy.
