IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the past, talented people were highly appreciated. However, nowadays, the situation has reversed. In many societies, untalented individuals repeatedly produce subpar work, arguing that "anyone can do it," thereby degrading culture. I fully agree that the value of geniuses has dramatically decreased. In the following paragraphs, I will substantiate my viewpoints.

In a century where attention is the most valuable currency, everyone seeks to capture it in different ways. Some go to extremes—just turn on your phone and open any news or social media platform, and you will see "incomplete" creators, artists, and musicians. As society evolves, culture does as well, forming new branches and becoming increasingly personal and taste-dependent. For example, in the past, music had only a few main genres like jazz, rock, classical, and national styles. But today, each of these genres has divided into countless subgenres, making it difficult to define a single standard of quality.

In the past, the mindset of "anyone can do it" didn't exist, and cultural behavior followed logical principles. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci, actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, and musicians like Bob Dylan were masters of their craft, staying within their areas of expertise. However, today, some artists merely splash paint onto a canvas, poets ignore traditional poetry rules, screenwriters create illogical plots, and musicians produce whatever they please, dismissing criticism by saying, "It's not my fault if the listener doesn't like my music." Culture, which has been built brick by brick over millennia with the contributions of countless individuals, is now being dismantled piece by piece by so-called "new-wave" thinkers. This poses a serious threat to future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses the prompt effectively, taking a clear stance that genuine talent is being devalued in modern culture. The response outlines relevant ideas regarding the impact of social media, changing societal standards, and the proliferation of subgenres and so-called 'new-wave' thinkers. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, while the ideas are relevant, some points could be explored with more specific real-world examples rather than generalizations. For instance, mentioning specific artists like Leonardo da Vinci is helpful, but the supporting arguments could be extended further to fully satisfy the highest band descriptors. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed with a clear position, warranting a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction that outlines the writer's stance, moving into the influence of attention economies and changing cultural branches, and concluding with a strong comparison between past and present artistic standards. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'However, nowadays,' and 'For example,' although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently to structure the argument. The referencing is generally clear, guiding the reader smoothly from one point to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task. Phrases like 'subpar work,' 'attention is the most valuable currency,' and 'staying within their areas of expertise' show a good attempt at less common lexical items. There is an awareness of style and collocation, although occasional minor inaccuracies appear, such as referring to 'national styles' rather than traditional or folk music styles. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary choices do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily grasp the writer's intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating control over grammatical forms. Examples of complex structures include conditional and participial clauses, such as 'As society evolves, culture does as well, forming new branches...' and 'Culture, which has been built brick by brick over millennia... is now being dismantled piece by piece.' There are frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout the response. The minor errors that do occur do not impede communication, reflecting a solid command of grammar appropriate for a band 7 level.
