In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The main issue our world is facing now a days is the attitude that anyone can do it' in the arts- music, literature, acting, art, etc. Due to this, people with talents are not valued and people with zero talent were overrated. I will discuss my point of view on this topic and elaborate that how much I agree to this statement by using solid verdicts.

People who believe that the overconfidence is present in these days which led them to believe that they can do anything regardless of their expertise. This overconfidence is present mainly in the people who are rich and wealthy. Rich and wealthy people can do whatever they want. They can use their references to get whatever they want whether it is a job position or any position they have fond to get. For instance, in Pakistan a medical test after intermediate is conducted by the education commission which has limited seats. But the seats were sold out for handsome amount even before the test started. As a result, the students who were really capable were unable to get the position. And these students were forced to study other subjects and leave their interest of life due to low income of their parents. The same situation is prevailing in every field whether it is acting, music or literature. Social media is also a big reason for this. On social media specially on ''tiktok'' there are people who after spreading vulgarity get views and money and the real talent and real people who can do acting remain unnoticed.

But there still is the chance for the people who work really hard. Out of 100 seats if 98 are being sold, 2 are still available for the right ones. Although the ratio is relatively low but not exactly zero.

So, I agree to the statement that anyone can do type of attitude is responsible for the people with no talent to become rich and noticeable and the legitimate talent is not gaining any attention.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing with the prompt and discussing how people without genuine talent achieve fame or success. However, the development of ideas wanders off-topic when discussing corruption in medical admissions tests in Pakistan, which does not directly relate to the arts, literature, or acting specified in the prompt. While the mention of social media and TikTok touches back on the arts and entertainment industries, the digression limits the depth of task response. The position is maintained throughout, but the supporting examples are somewhat tangential and over-generalised. Consequently, the task achievement demonstrates features of Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the second body paragraph is extremely long and encompasses multiple disparate ideas, including wealth, entrance exam corruption, and social media, before abruptly pivoting to a counter-argument at the end. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is sometimes unclear, and transitions between ideas within the long paragraph are abrupt. Logical progression is occasionally disrupted by these shifts in topic, placing this criterion at Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'expertise', 'prevailing', 'unnoticed', and 'legitimate'. However, there are noticeable word-choice inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'people with talents are not valued and people with zero talent were overrated' (mixed tenses and phrasing) and 'handsome amount' instead of a large amount. Spelling and word formation errors, such as 'now a days' and 'overconfidence' where 'overconfidence' is used incorrectly to mean arrogance or the 'anyone can do it' attitude, occur throughout, limiting the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb tense consistency ('people with talents are not valued and people with zero talent were overrated'), article usage, and prepositional phrasing ('elaborate that how much I agree'). Sentence structures in the second paragraph become convoluted and prone to error, such as 'People who believe that the overconfidence is present in these days which led them to believe...'. While meaning is generally conveyed, these frequent errors place the response firmly at Band 5.0.
