IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.
Do you agree or disagree?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
In recent years, the belief that artistic success requires no special gift has become a common attitude in many countries. I completely agree that this mindset allows people with little ability to achieve fame and fortune, rewarding them with media attention and lucrative contracts while greatly undermining the recognition that gifted artists deserve.
First and foremost, this attitude allows people to build fame through sheer visibility, something that years of disciplined practice often simply cannot provide. For instance, a singer who chooses to enter a televised talent show can gain millions of viewers, a record deal and constant press coverage within weeks, even if their voice relies heavily on studio editing. Similarly, those who post short acting or comedy clips online are able to attract sponsorships, film roles and a loyal fan base with little formal preparation. When these individuals eventually reach the mainstream, they do so with a far greater public profile than most trained performers ever achieve. They are no longer amateurs experimenting online; they are household names who can command higher fees than those who spent a decade at drama school or a conservatoire.
Furthermore, this culture has a damaging effect regarding how real ability is rewarded. Many skilled painters, novelists and musicians struggle to earn a living without a large online following, leading to financial hardship and, in some cases, the abandonment of their craft altogether. The celebrity-driven market only widens this gap. For example, a classically trained violinist might spend twenty years perfecting her technique and realise that a viral influencer with a cheap guitar earns more from a single sponsored post than she does from an entire concert season. Such examples ensure that when talented young people consider a career in the arts, they are discouraged, disillusioned and reluctant to commit to the demanding training that true artistry requires.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that the "anyone can do it" attitude is highly harmful to the arts. The undeserved fame, wealth and attention it hands to untalented performers ultimately turn genuine artists into an overlooked and undervalued minority.
