IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.
Do you agree or disagree?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In recent years, eventhough there are no talents, people can still do arts such as music, literature, acting, art and more is often argued to some countries. I strongly agree that people with natural skills must be given priority as they can showcase more than individuals know.
On the one hand, individuals who naturally born with skills and talents have been compromised by the society. For instance, artists who can paint will sell their arts through online, buyers will offer them low prices as they think that everyone can paint.
Furthermore, the band of musicians and choir of singers often discourage to perform in a crowd of people for the reason that, people prefer influencers. For example, in formal occassions, people usually invite performers, however, individuals nowadays prefer to give the offer to well-known influencers from social media platforms such as Tiktok and Facebook. The reason for this is since most people are into social media, they want to see influencers that they know or they are familiar to.
In conclusion, I disagree to the quote saying "anyone can do it." The skills and talents are given naturally to people, and it can be enhanced. Moreover, I strongly agree that skilled and talented people must be given priority and should not be compared to influencers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response presents a clear position throughout, agreeing that genuine talent should be valued. However, there are significant limitations in task achievement. First, the response is significantly under-length, containing only 215 words compared to the minimum requirement of 250 words, which incurs a direct penalty. Furthermore, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the argument regarding artists selling online and buyers offering low prices touches on an important point, but it lacks deep elaboration or strong supporting evidence. Similarly, the example of social media influencers versus traditional performers is relevant, but the overall discussion remains surface-level and fails to fully explore the broader implications of the prompt. Consequently, the ideas are under-developed, aligning the response with a Band 5 profile.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a basic structural organization with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though some paragraphs are quite brief. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition in the opening sentence ('In recent years, eventhough there are no talents, people can still do arts...') is confusing and disrupts the logical flow. Additionally, the relationship between sentences within the body paragraphs occasionally feels disjointed, lacking seamless progression. While the overall arrangement is discernible, these mechanical and sometimes inaccurate cohesive links place the response firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'compromised', 'influencers', and 'platforms', but these are often accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and phrasing. For example, phrases like 'eventhough there are no talents' and 'individuals who naturally born with skills' demonstrate inaccurate lexical patterns and grammatical forms of words. Spelling is generally acceptable, but frequent issues with precise vocabulary selection restrict the range. The vocabulary is repetitive in places, such as the repeated use of 'talent' and 'people', which causes some difficulty for the reader and prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay exhibits a limited range of grammatical structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, such as 'For example, in formal occassions, people usually invite performers, however, individuals nowadays prefer to offer...', these attempts often result in faulty punctuation or grammatical errors (e.g., comma splices). There are frequent errors throughout the text, including missing prepositions, incorrect verb forms ('naturally born' instead of 'born with' or 'natural'), and tense inconsistencies. For instance, 'eventhough there are no talents, people can still do arts ... is often argued' contains structural confusion. These frequent errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, though meaning can generally be deciphered, supporting a Band 5 score.
