Student answer (Band 6.5)

In contemporary society, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, individuals with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated. I agree with this view due to technological advancement and economic inequality.

A particularly noteworthy reason why everybody believe they can do it in the arts is its potential to apply modern technology. This can largely be attributed to the fact that technology can be used to modify several aspects of art, thereby enabling people to produce quality products. In practical terms, some real images or actions can be edited to suit people's needs. This can be exemplified by modern day drawings, where they are designed by computers rather than drawing by hand. As a consequence, anybody with access to computers can easily do it, which may in turn affect those with genuine talents.

Another compelling reason why there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts is due to economic inequality. This is particularly significant because wealthy individuals can use money to produce their art, allowing them to compete with people who have genuine talents. By having access to money, people are better positioned to create unique arts, which can subsequently affect talented individuals. For instance, modern literature illustrates how wealthy people can create unique literature without real talents. Ultimately, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

To conclude, I believe that in some nations today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, and art, because of advancements in technology and economic inequality.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the view in the introduction and maintaining this position throughout the essay. Two distinct main ideas are presented to support this stance: technological advancement and economic inequality. However, while the ideas are relevant, the development remains somewhat repetitive and lacks specific, concrete examples. For instance, the reference to modern literature illustrating how wealthy people create unique literature without real talents is vague and under-developed. To reach a higher band, the student should provide deeper explanation and more precise real-world examples rather than relying on generalised statements. Overall, the response meets the basic requirements of task response for a competent pass, demonstrating a clear overarching perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, as well as distinct body paragraphs dedicated to each supporting point. Logical progression is generally maintained, though the transitions between ideas can feel a bit mechanical. For example, the opening sentences of the body paragraphs follow a very similar formula ('A particularly noteworthy reason why...'). Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'This can be exemplified by' and 'Ultimately', but referencing is occasionally repetitive or vague. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the main themes of technology and economic inequality.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using topic-related terms such as 'contemporary society', 'technological advancement', 'economic inequality', and 'genuine talent'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally affected by slight unnaturalness or inaccuracy in word choice, such as 'apply modern technology' or 'create unique arts'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To improve, the student should incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of sophisticated lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response. There are successful complex structures, such as 'This can largely be attributed to the fact that technology can be used to modify several aspects of art...', which demonstrate grammatical control. However, some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasings occur, such as 'everybody believe they can do it' instead of 'believes', and 'rather than drawing by hand' instead of 'rather than being drawn by hand'. Punctuation is generally sound, and these minor errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments without difficulty.
