IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

IN THE MODERN ERA MOSTLY PEOPLE WHICH HAVE MONEY AND RESOURCES WHEN THEY ARE DONE WITH THEIR ACTUAL WORK START DOING SOME EXTRA THINGS AND BOLDLY STAND WITH THE STATEMENT " ANYONE CAN DO IT" OVERALL I AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT.

FIRSTLY, IF WE TALK ABOUT THE TALENT IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. MOST OF THE TIME WE SEE RICH PEOPLE WITH AUTO TUNE MADE SONGS SINGING WITHOUT ANY GOOD VOICE. AND ON THE OTHER HAND A PERSON WITH A GOOD VOICE AND MUSIC SKILLS GETS LEFT BEHIND DUE TO LACK OF RESOURCES THAT THE RICH ONE HAS.FOR EXAMPLE IF WE TALK ABOUT HANIA AMIR SHE IS A PAKISTANI DRAMA ACTOR WITH GOOD ACTING SKILLS AND WHOLE PAKISTAN KNOWS THAT BUT IN THE RECENT DAYS SHE WROTE AND SANG A SONG WHICH CLEARLY LACKS MUSIC AND LYRICS SKILLS BUT STILL SHE GOT VIEWS DUE TO HER PAID PROMOTION AND ON THE OTHER HAND WE SEE MANY TALANTED SINGERS STRUGGLEING DUE TO LACK OF MONEY AND RESOURCES.

SECONDLY, IF WE LOOK AROUND WE SEE THAT RICH USES HIS MONEY TO CREATE HIS PRESENCE BUT HE CAN,T BUY THE SKILLS AND GOOD VOICE USING THAT IS NATURALLY GOD GIFTED THING IF WE TALK ABOUT ANYTHING E.G LITERATURE, MUSIC E.T.C SO A PERSON WITH LOW RESOURCES CAN EASILY OUT BEAT THEM IN THE PROSPECT USING HIS HARDWORK AND OWN PLATFORMS LIKE YOUTUBE. SO A PROPER DIRECTION IS ALSO NECESSARY AND PROPER USE OF WHAT YOU HAVE CAN OUTBEAT.

OVERALL , PEOPLE SHOULD FOCUS MORE APPARENTLY ON THEIR INNER SKILLS THAT WHAT THEY CAN DO RATHER FOCUSING ON THE TERM " ANYONE CAN DO IT". THIS ILLUSION CAN LATER KILL THEIR INNER ABILITY TO BECOME WHAT THEY ACTUALLY WANTED TO BE IN THIS WAY PEOPLE WITH THE GENUINE TALENT AND SKILLS CAN EXCEL IN THEIR PASSION AND PEOPLE WITH NO TALENT CAN NEVER REPLACE THEM.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position agreeing with the statement that the 'anyone can do it' attitude leads to talent being undervalued due to commercialism and resources. The ideas are relevant, discussing how financial backing can elevate unqualified individuals while genuinely talented people struggle. However, the development is somewhat limited and relies on sweeping generalisations and a slightly informal example involving a specific celebrity (Hania Amir). While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the arguments would benefit from greater depth and more academic support rather than personal assertions. Consequently, this performance aligns best with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an overall awareness of paragraph structure. However, the lack of standard punctuation—such as writing entirely in capital letters and missing periods or commas in various places—disrupts the flow and makes the logical progression harder to follow than expected at higher bands. Cohesive devices are used simply, with transitional phrases like 'FIRSTLY' and 'SECONDLY', but referencing is sometimes unclear, such as shifting pronouns from plural to singular ('rich uses his money'). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion can be mechanical. This reflects the characteristics of Band 5.5, rounded to 5.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the arts, money, and talent, employing words like 'commercialism' conceptually, though the actual lexical choices are quite basic and repetitive ('talent', 'resources', 'money', 'skills'). There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'struggleing', 'auto tune made songs', and 'out beat them in the prospect'. While the meaning is generally communicated, the frequent errors in word formation and spelling place this firmly in the Band 5 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but it is heavily marred by persistent grammatical errors and a complete disregard for standard punctuation and casing (writing in all caps). There are run-on sentences and major punctuation omissions, such as 'FOR EXAMPLE IF WE TALK ABOUT HANIA AMIR SHE IS A PAKISTANI DRAMA ACTOR WITH GOOD ACTING SKILLS...'. Grammatical control is weak, with errors in subject-verb agreement ('mostly people which have', 'rich uses his money') and tense consistency. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader and typify Band 5 grammar.
